A 32-year-old man from Heideveld was brutally gunned down in Surrey Estate, Cape Town, late on Tuesday night, succumbing to a hail of bullets that allegedly struck him 21 times. The incident occurred just before midnight on 9 July, leaving the victim slumped in his car with fatal wounds to his upper body.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Jayce Naidoo confirmed the murder, stating that officers were dispatched to the scene in Sirius Street, Surrey Estate, at approximately 11.40pm.
Manenberg SAPS station commander Naidoo provided further details: “The body of a 32-year-old male was found with multiple gunshot wounds slumped in the driver seat of his car. It is alleged that the 32-year-old male victim was sitting in his car when he came under attack, in Sirius Street, Surrey Estate. His assailants fired several fatal gunshots at him, hitting him multiple times in his upper body. A case of murder has been opened for investigation. No arrest has been made.”
Vanessa Adrianse, Chairperson of the Heideveld Community Policing Forum (CPF), also confirmed the murder but stated that the motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this stage.
Adrianse said: “We cannot say whether it is gang affiliated as the matter is under investigation.”
Heideveld, the victim's home suburb, is located within the Athlone area of Cape Town, situated in the Western Cape province and falling under the jurisdiction of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality.
This latest incident adds to a growing list of violent crimes in the Cape Town area. Just last week, another man was killed and a woman injured in a suspected gang-related shooting in Heideveld on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi reported that officers arriving at the scene in Sneeuberg Road found the two victims already being transported to a hospital. Tragically, the 40-year-old man was declared dead upon arrival.
Swartbooi added that detectives are investigating the incident and searching for clues. “Manenberg police are investigating a murder and an attempted murder. We appeal to anyone who can shed light on the circumstances surrounding this incident to please call Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he urged.
In a separate incident, Woodstock police are actively searching for two gunmen responsible for the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old resident in Bromwell Street on Sunday 29 June.
According to police reports, they received a complaint around 01:20 and upon arrival, discovered the body of a man with fatal gunshot wounds.
WO Joseph Swartbooi, a provincial spokesperson, stated: “The victim was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. The suspects, who fled the scene, are yet to be arrested.” He confirmed that a murder case is under investigation, but the motive for the attack remains undetermined.
Gary Adams, the Woodstock Community Policing Forum’s (CPF) public relations officer, expressed the community's sorrow over the incident. “The deceased was well-known in the area and was originally from Salt River. At this stage it cannot be confirmed whether it is gang-related. We hope the culprits will be brought to book,” Adams said.
The recent surge in violent crime in Cape Town has raised concerns among residents and authorities alike. The police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that may assist in their investigations.
