Three Suspected Robbers Killed In Shootout With Police In Alrode – Robbed A Man At His Own Front Door — Dead By That Afternoon

0

Three suspected robbers were fatally wounded in a shootout with police on Thursday afternoon in Alrode, Ekurhuleni.

The incident took place along Vereeniging Road after members of the Tactical Response Team spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a robbery.

Police said a man had earlier been robbed of an undisclosed amount of money while entering his home. A lookout was then activated for the vehicle linked to the suspects.

The three men were declared dead at the scene after what police described as an exchange of gunfire.

No police injuries were reported in the supplied information.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said officers attempted to stop the vehicle after spotting it on Vereeniging Road.

“Members of the Tactical Response Team later spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it,” she said.

“The occupants reportedly opened fire at the police, who retaliated and called for backup.”

The police account remains subject to investigation. The identities of the three deceased men have not been released, and no court process will follow against them because they died at the scene.

Robbery Report Triggers Search

The operation began after police received a report that a man had been robbed while entering his residence.

The amount of money allegedly taken has not been disclosed.

A lookout was issued for the suspects’ vehicle, allowing officers and supporting security teams to monitor roads in the area.

The Tactical Response Team later identified a vehicle believed to be linked to the robbery. Officers attempted to pull it over, but police said the occupants opened fire.

The circumstances of the first robbery, including where the victim was approached and how many people were involved, have not been fully detailed.

Investigators will have to establish whether the vehicle was directly connected to that robbery, who was inside it and whether the money recovered at the scene belonged to the victim.

Until the investigation is completed, the recovered cash should be described as money suspected to have been stolen rather than confirmed stolen property.

Police Return Fire

According to Nevhuhulwi, officers returned fire after the vehicle’s occupants allegedly shot at them.

The police then called for additional support from the Gauteng Traffic Airwing, CAP Security and Tracker Connect security teams.

All three occupants were fatally wounded and declared dead at the scene.

The exact sequence of the shooting, the number of shots fired and the firearms allegedly used will form part of the investigation.

As in all incidents in which people die during an exchange of gunfire with police, the police version must be examined alongside physical evidence, witness statements and any available video footage.

The investigation will also have to establish whether the use of force complied with the law and police procedures.

The deaths do not by themselves prove that the three men fired at police or committed the earlier robbery. Those claims remain part of the police account and must be supported by evidence.

Three Firearms Recovered

Police said three firearms were recovered at the scene.

Two of the firearms allegedly had their serial numbers filed off. Removing or damaging a firearm’s serial number can make it more difficult to trace the weapon’s ownership and history.

The weapons will be subjected to ballistic testing.

The testing may help investigators determine whether the firearms were used in the Alrode robbery or in other crimes. It may also establish whether the weapons were fired during the exchange with police.

Ballistic evidence can include comparisons between bullets, cartridge cases and the markings left by a specific firearm.

The results will be considered alongside the police officers’ firearms, crime-scene evidence and witness accounts.

No conclusion about the origin or previous use of the weapons has been announced.

False Registration Plates Found

A set of false registration plates was also recovered from the vehicle.

Police have not said whether the plates were attached to the vehicle when it was stopped or whether they were found inside it.

The discovery may assist investigators in determining whether the vehicle was being used to conceal its identity or avoid detection.

However, the presence of false plates does not by itself establish who owned the vehicle or who used it during the robbery.

Investigators may examine the vehicle’s registration records, ownership history, fingerprints, CCTV footage and information from tracking systems.

The vehicle may also be examined for additional weapons, ammunition, clothing or other items that could connect it to the robbery.

Private Security Teams Assist

The Gauteng Traffic Airwing, CAP Security and Tracker Connect security teams responded after police called for backup.

The operation shows how police and private security companies may work together when a wanted vehicle is identified and a situation becomes dangerous.

The Traffic Airwing can assist with aerial observation and coordination, while private security and vehicle-tracking teams may provide information about the movement of a vehicle.

The specific role played by each team in the Alrode operation has not been disclosed.

The involvement of private security personnel does not change the responsibility of the police to investigate the shooting and ensure that evidence is properly collected and preserved.

Questions Investigators Must Answer

The investigation will now focus on several key questions.

Detectives will need to establish whether the vehicle was the same one used in the robbery, who was inside it and whether the occupants were armed before the police attempted to stop them.

They will also need to determine what happened during the exchange of gunfire, whether all three men were involved in the alleged robbery and whether any other people were connected to the crime.

The recovered money will have to be compared with the victim’s report. Investigators may also examine bank records, surveillance footage and statements from neighbours or other witnesses who were near the residence.

The firearms will undergo ballistic testing, while the false registration plates may be examined for fingerprints and other forensic evidence.

The police officers involved in the shooting may also be required to provide statements about their actions and the sequence of events.

No Identities Released

Authorities had not released the identities of the three deceased men in the supplied information.

Their families will need to be formally notified before names are made public.

The men should not be identified as convicted robbers. Police described them as suspects linked to a robbery, but no court had made a finding against them.

Their deaths also mean that questions about their alleged roles may never be tested in a criminal trial. The investigation may still establish what happened, but it cannot result in convictions against people who died at the scene.

The victim of the alleged robbery has not been identified either.

Police Shootings And Accountability

When people are killed in a shootout with police, the public expects both accountability and clarity.

Police must protect themselves and members of the public when confronted with a violent threat. At the same time, every use of lethal force must be examined to ensure that it was necessary and lawful.

The independent investigation process, if applicable, will be important in determining whether the officers’ actions complied with the law.

The physical evidence, ballistic results, post-mortem findings and statements from all available witnesses will help build a clearer picture.

A police statement describing the occupants as having opened fire is an important part of the initial account, but it is not the same as a final judicial finding.

The investigation should therefore be allowed to establish the facts without speculation about the identities, motives or criminal history of the deceased men.

Investigation Continues

Nevhuhulwi said the firearms would undergo ballistic testing as part of the ongoing investigation.

The testing is expected to form part of a wider forensic inquiry into the robbery, the vehicle and the shootout.

Detectives may also investigate whether the firearms were linked to other cases, whether the false registration plates had been used before and whether the recovered cash can be connected to the victim.

Further information may be released once the families have been notified and the forensic work has progressed.

For now, police have confirmed that three suspects died, three firearms were recovered, suspected stolen cash was found and false registration plates were seized.

The circumstances of the robbery and the shooting remain under investigation.
