Sassa confirms August SRD grant payment dates and launches WhatsApp service

The South African Social Security Agency has confirmed that August 2026 COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant payments will be made from 24 to 26 August.

Sassa has urged beneficiaries to check their payment status before the payment window to confirm when their money will be available.

The agency said beneficiaries should not assume that everyone will be paid on the same day, as payment dates may differ depending on the outcome of their status check and banking processes.

Sassa is also introducing a new WhatsApp self-service channel for COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries.

The agency said the digital service is meant to make it easier for beneficiaries to access grant information without having to visit a Sassa office or contact the call centre.

“Sassa is introducing a WhatsApp self-service channel for COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries.”

According to Sassa, the WhatsApp platform will allow beneficiaries to access key information in an automated way.

“This channel allows beneficiaries to access key information without visiting offices or calling the Call Centre. The service is automated and available through WhatsApp,” Sassa said.

The introduction of the WhatsApp channel forms part of Sassa’s push to expand digital access to grant-related services and reduce pressure on physical offices and call centres.

The agency has encouraged beneficiaries to use digital platforms to check updates, payment details and other information related to their grants.

Meanwhile, Sassa has also released its September 2026 grant payment schedule.

Older Persons Grants will be paid from Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

Disability Grants will be paid from Thursday, 3 September 2026.

Children’s Grants will be paid from Friday, 4 September 2026.

Beneficiaries are reminded that funds do not have to be withdrawn on the first day of payment. Once the money is available in an account, it will remain there until it is needed.

The August SRD payment period applies specifically to approved COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries.

Sassa said beneficiaries should check their status ahead of 24 August to confirm whether their August payment has been approved and when it is expected to reflect.

The new WhatsApp self-service channel is expected to help beneficiaries who need quick access to information but may struggle to reach Sassa through traditional channels.

Many SRD beneficiaries rely on digital updates to track their applications and payments, particularly those who do not live near Sassa offices or who cannot afford repeated trips to service points.

By using automated WhatsApp responses, the agency aims to provide a faster and more convenient way for beneficiaries to obtain grant-related information.

The agency has again encouraged beneficiaries to ensure that their personal and banking details are correct to avoid delays in receiving payments.

Sassa has also warned beneficiaries to rely only on official communication channels and to be cautious of scams targeting grant recipients.

Beneficiaries should not share their personal information, banking details or identity documents with unknown individuals claiming to assist with grant payments.

The confirmed August SRD payment window means approved beneficiaries can expect payments to be processed between Monday, 24 August, and Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

However, the exact day funds reflect may depend on the beneficiary’s bank.

Sassa said beneficiaries should check their payment status before making plans around the money.

The September payment schedule for permanent grants will begin the following week, starting with older persons on 2 September, followed by disability grants on 3 September and children’s grants on 4 September.
