JEFFREYS BAY, EASTERN CAPE – A traffic officer died when the state vehicle she was driving collided head-on with a long-distance bus on the N2 in Jeffreys Bay on Monday morning.

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the officer had been travelling back to her station after attending another accident scene when the crash occurred.

Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the officer was declared dead on the scene. “This is a deeply painful loss to us as the Eastern Cape Department of Transport as we have lost a dedicated traffic officer who was in the line [of] duty at the time of her death,” Binqose said. “All occupants of the bus escaped unharmed.”

A culpable homicide case has been opened at the Jeffreys Bay police station for further investigation, according to Binqose.

The road, which serves as the primary access route connecting Jeffreys Bay to Gqeberha to the east and the Tsitsikamma region to the west, has since been closed to traffic. Motorists are being redirected by traffic law enforcement officers.
