Surgeons unable to save Donovan Marx’s ears after brutal Ventersdorp farm attack – Family Shares Medical Update

North West cattle farmer Donovan Marx faces the prospect of needing prosthetic ears after surgeons were unable to save his own following a brutal attack on his farm near Ventersdorp on Wednesday.

In a formal statement issued on Saturday through their attorneys, Steyn du Toit Inc, on behalf of his wife, Louise Marx, the family confirmed that the 50-year-old remains in a stable condition in intensive care at Mediclinic Potchefstroom.

During Wednesday's attack, assailants allegedly kicked and beat Marx, stabbed him in the leg, cut off both of his ears, and shot him in the back—with the bullet passing through his kidney. According to the family, surgeons also had to remove part of his large intestine during emergency surgery.

“The family is grateful for the progress he has made thus far, and for the dedicated medical care he continues to receive,” the statement read. “However, his injuries remain severe, and his recovery will require time and further medical attention.”

Doctors have informed the family that prosthetic ears may be considered as an option in the future, depending on Marx’s ongoing recovery and further medical evaluations.

Family shuts down false social media claims

Alongside the medical update, the Marx family moved to shut down circulating social media rumours claiming that the farmer's genitals had also been removed during the assault, labelling the claims entirely false.

They called on both individuals and organisations to stop spreading the fabricated claims immediately and asked that Marx’s dignity and privacy be respected.

“The injuries Donovan has suffered are already extremely serious,” the family stated. “There is no justification for adding further falsehoods, distorting facts or attempting to sensationalise his suffering.”

Noting that the police investigation is currently at a sensitive stage, the family confirmed they have full confidence in the authorities and are co-operating through their legal team. To avoid compromising the case, they stated they would not discuss details of the attack, potential suspects, or investigative leads, and urged members of the public speculating on the matter in public forums to stop.

Despite the false rumours online, the family thanked South Africans for the outpouring of genuine support, prayers, and messages of encouragement.

“Fortunately, these genuine expressions of humanity far outweigh the conduct of those who seek to exploit the family’s circumstances through malicious allegations, unfounded speculation or sensationalist reporting,” the statement read. “They ask South Africans to continue praying for Donovan’s recovery, his medical team and his family.”

In an earlier statement on Thursday, Louise Marx expressed her gratitude for the support: “We are overwhelmed by your love. We have no words. We trust in the Lord for strength and healing. Our greatest wish is simply that Donovan rests and recovers.”

How the Syferfontein farm ambush unfolded

The attack took place at approximately 08:30 on Wednesday on the family’s farm in Syferfontein, near Ventersdorp.

According to North West police spokesperson Captain Majang Skalkie, a farmworker was mowing the lawn when three armed men wearing balaclavas emerged from behind the farmhouse. The gunmen pointed their weapons at the worker, demanded to know the whereabouts of the farm owner, bound his hands and feet with cable ties, and moved him to the back of the property.

When Marx arrived in his red single-cab Isuzu bakkie (pick-up truck), two of the assailants approached him and shot him in the upper body.

Skalkie said the attackers dragged Marx inside the house, tied his hands and feet with cable ties, and proceeded to stab and assault him. The suspects then ransacked the home, stole three firearms from a safe, and fled the scene in Marx’s bakkie.

The farmworker managed to free himself and raise the alarm, allowing emergency responders to rush Marx to hospital.

Police manhunt and government condemnation

Police are investigating charges of house robbery and attempted murder. By Thursday, Skalkie confirmed that no arrests had yet been made.

North West police commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams condemned the violence and appealed to the public for assistance in tracking down the perpetrators.

“The use of firearms and the brutal assault of an individual in the course of a robbery are serious criminal acts that will not be tolerated,” Adams said.

Minister of Agriculture Willie Aucamp also weighed in on Thursday, extending his prayers to the Marx family and the broader farming community, adding: “There is no place in our country for such senseless and barbaric acts.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Ventersdorp detective branch commander Captain Bonita Dry on 082 373 7781, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit an anonymous tip-off via the MySAPS app.
