The collapse of the four-storey Vrindavan Eco Village Cave Temple extension in Verulam last week, which tragically resulted in the loss of five lives, was due to a catalogue of failures, an official investigation has revealed.
Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson announced on Wednesday that the building had no approved plans, lacked a construction permit, was badly misaligned, and was constructed using substandard materials.
Macpherson made the revelations at a joint media briefing held in Durban by his department and the eThekwini municipality. He confirmed that a full criminal investigation will now be launched, led by the same police team that investigated the George building collapse.
