Kenyan Nationals Face Deportation for Illegal Work in Johannesburg
Seven Kenyan nationals working illegally in Johannesburg have been served with deportation orders by South African authorities, including the police and the Department of Home Affairs.
The individuals were apprehended while working for an intermediary organisation involved in processing applications for so-called "Afrikaner refugees". It has been confirmed that the Kenyans were in South Africa on 90-day tourist visas.
Prior to their arrival, the Department of Home Affairs had denied their initial visa applications, which were intended to allow them to conduct volunteer work in South Africa. However, the department was later alerted to the fact that the group was engaged in paid employment.
Authorities checked the Kenyans’ passports and discovered that they did not possess the correct entry visas for the work they were undertaking.
According to a senior government official with direct knowledge of the events, American officials were kept informed of the unfolding "standard" immigration operation by the police and the Department of Home Affairs. The official also confirmed to News24 that no American official was arrested by South African authorities, and there was no interference with the refugee programme conducted by the US.
It has been confirmed that the premises where the refugee processing and screening are conducted are not diplomatic premises or locations.
The Kenyan nationals are expected to voluntarily return to Kenya on Monday night.
This is a developing story.
