Alleged Crime Boss "KT" Molefe Faces Court as State Seeks to Centralise Cases

Alexandra, Johannesburg – Katiso "KT" Molefe, accused of being a crime boss, along with his co-accused Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floryd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana, are due to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court today. Prosecutors are pushing forward with an application to centralise several serious criminal cases linked to the group.

The State is seeking to combine multiple dockets into a single prosecution process. These dockets include the 2022 murder of popular music producer Oupa John Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody. This case, along with others, reportedly involves a complex network of killings, conspiracies, and illegal arms possession that spans across Gauteng.

Molefe, 61, was apprehended by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team in July 2025. He faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. His co-accused, including Tau, Mabusela, and Kekana, are named alongside him in the consolidation bid.

If the application is granted, the centralisation would likely move the cases to the Johannesburg High Court. This move is designed to streamline proceedings, avoid duplication of witnesses and evidence, and speed up stalled trials. Prosecutors argue that consolidating the cases will ensure coherence and efficiency, given the overlapping nature of the alleged crimes.

Molefe was granted bail of R400,000 in October 2025 by the High Court, after a lower court had initially denied his release. His bail conditions require him to report to the police several times a week, surrender his passport, and remain within Gauteng, with only limited exceptions.

Despite the bail, prosecutors maintain that the evidence against Molefe and his associates is compelling. This evidence includes ballistic links between firearms seized in connection with a number of murders and attempted murders. Investigators have connected the network to a larger alleged organised crime group known as the Big Five cartel.

The court appearance is of significant importance to the families of the victims, some of whom have been waiting for years to see progress in these cases. The consolidation application could represent a turning point in what has become one of Gauteng’s most complex and high-profile organised crime prosecutions. The outcome of today's hearing could significantly impact the future of the case and the pursuit of justice for the victims involved.
