South Africans can expect a mix of warm conditions, morning fog, and afternoon thunderstorms on Tuesday, 22 September, with rain possible across large parts of the country, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said.
SAWS reported that no impact-based severe weather warnings, fire danger warnings, or advisories have been issued for the day.
Gauteng and North West
Gauteng will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers developing during the afternoon. The UVB sunburn index is expected to be high.
The North West is expected to see similar conditions, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Free State and Mpumalanga
The Free State will begin the day with patches of fog in the east and along the Lesotho border, before turning partly cloudy and cool to warm. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are also expected.
In Mpumalanga, fog may affect parts of the Highveld in the morning. Conditions are expected to become partly cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers, while the Lowveld should be warmer.
Limpopo and Northern Cape
In Limpopo, morning cloud, drizzle and fog are possible along the escarpment. Later, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over the central and south-eastern parts of the province.
The Northern Cape will experience morning fog in the south, followed by partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are forecast for most areas, excluding the north-west.
Western Cape
The Western Cape will be cloudy with morning fog along the south coast, later turning partly cloudy and warm to hot. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the province, excluding the extreme south-west. SAWS said the UVB sunburn index will be very high.
Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape has a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms in both halves. The western areas are expected to be partly cloudy and warm after morning fog south of the escarpment, with scattered thunderstorms from the afternoon.
The eastern half will start with morning fog south of the escarpment, followed by partly cloudy, cool-to-warm weather, and isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.
KwaZulu-Natal
In KwaZulu-Natal, the day begins with morning fog over the interior, turning partly cloudy and cool to warm. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected. Coastal winds are forecast to shift from southerly to south-westerly, easterly and north-easterly during the day. The UVB index is expected to be high.
SAWS reiterated that while thunderstorms are forecast across a broad stretch of the country, there are no severe weather alerts for Tuesday.
