REIGER PARK – A notorious gang leader, who was already out on bail for a string of violent crimes, has been taken in for questioning following the brutal execution of two Anti-Gang Unit officers and two young women in Reiger Park. The breakthrough comes as the South African Police Service (SAPS) recovered two high-calibre R5 rifles that were stolen from the fallen constables during the deadly ambush on Friday night.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi provided a high-stakes update on Monday afternoon, August 10, 2026, after visiting the grieving families of the two slain officers. The investigation, which has seen a multidisciplinary team working around the clock, has now shifted its focus to a "person of interest" who allegedly leads one of the merciless gangs terrorising the East Rand.

According to Minister Cachalia, the suspect is a known gang leader who was out on bail despite facing six other serious charges. These charges include two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
"The person of interest is a known gang member, leading one of the gangs in the area who faces six other charges and is currently out on bail," Cachalia confirmed.
