A 57-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run in Brindhaven, KwaZulu-Natal, after the vehicle he was travelling in stopped along Jabu Ngcobo Road on Sunday night.
The incident happened near Fairview Drive at about 21:36 on 9 August 2026. Reaction Unit South Africa’s Operations Centre received a call for assistance, and officers were sent to the scene.
When they arrived, Reaction Officers found the man lying in the roadway. He was declared dead at the scene.
According to two relatives who were travelling with him, they had been driving in a silver Toyota Corolla towards Trenance Park when they stopped on the side of the road. The 57-year-old passenger then got out of the vehicle to urinate.
While he was outside the car, he was allegedly struck by an unknown white double-cab bakkie.
The driver of the bakkie did not stop after the collision and fled the area. The vehicle’s registration number and model are not known.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Authorities will now need to establish the direction in which the bakkie was travelling, identify the driver and determine whether any witnesses or nearby cameras can assist with the investigation.
The incident has also highlighted the danger faced by pedestrians and motorists on busy roads at night, particularly when vehicles stop on the roadside. However, no further details have been released about the road conditions, lighting or speed of the vehicle involved.
The deceased’s relatives were reportedly at the scene when Reaction Officers arrived. Their account is expected to form part of the investigation as authorities work to reconstruct what happened before and after the fatal impact.
The driver’s decision to leave the scene could make it more difficult for investigators to locate the vehicle, especially because no registration details are currently available. Members of the public who may have seen a white double-cab bakkie in the area around the time of the incident could potentially assist authorities.
