LIMPOPO – A tragic bus crash near Witvlag in Limpopo has claimed the lives of at least eight people. The bus, which was carrying 61 passengers, was travelling from Malawi to Gauteng last night when it experienced a mechanical failure, leading to the devastating accident.

Emergency services are currently on the scene, and it is understood that some bodies may still be trapped in the wreckage, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

The Limpopo Department of Transport's spokesperson, Mashudu Mabata, has confirmed that the N1 has been severely affected by the crash, although the road remains open to allow traffic to flow. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution.

"However, there is a truck next to the accident scene that is stuck, and traffic officers are conducting point duty in the area," Mabata stated. The presence of the stuck truck is further complicating traffic management in the area.

Mabata also announced that the road will be closed again at 10:00 to facilitate the recovery of the trailer and allow the SAPS Dog Unit to continue searching for any possible human remains. The temporary closure is necessary to ensure a thorough search of the crash site.

"Traffic officials and police officers continue to manage the scene," Mabata added. Authorities are working diligently to manage the aftermath of the crash and ensure the safety of motorists in the area.

Motorists are strongly advised to reduce speed when approaching the area, exercise extreme caution, and adhere to all road safety rules. The Limpopo Department of Transport urges drivers to be vigilant and patient as emergency operations continue.
