IMPEACHMENT IS BACK! The Shocking Court Ruling That Could Fire President Ramaphosa

0
The wait is finally over, and the news is massive. In a ruling that has sent shockwaves through the halls of power, South Africa’s Constitutional Court has delivered its judgment on the Phala Phala scandal. After more than 500 days of waiting, the highest court in the land has spoken—and it’s a huge blow to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The court has ruled that Parliament acted "unconstitutionally" when it voted to block the impeachment inquiry into the President back in 2022. This means the whole case is now heading back to Parliament, and the threat of impeachment is very real once again.

The Moment the Hammer Fell

On Friday, May 8, 2026, the Constitutional Court finally broke its long silence. The case, which was brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Transformation Movement (ATM), challenged the National Assembly's decision to reject a report that said the President "may have a case to answer."
The judges ruled that Parliament did not do its job properly. By simply voting the report away without a proper inquiry, they failed to hold the President accountable. Now, the "Buffalo" President is back in the crosshairs.

A Sofa Full of Secrets

For those who have forgotten, this all started with a sofa. Back in 2020, about $580,000 (around R8 million) in cash was stolen from a sofa at Ramaphosa’s private Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.
The President didn't report the crime to the police in the normal way. Instead, his private security guards allegedly tracked down the thieves, interrogated them, and even paid them to keep quiet. It was only when former spy boss Arthur Fraser blew the whistle in 2022 that the world found out.
A special panel of experts, led by retired Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, said there was enough evidence to suggest the President might have broken the law. But the ANC used its majority in Parliament to stop any further investigation. Today, the Constitutional Court said that was a huge mistake.

The GNU’s Biggest Test

This ruling couldn't have come at a worse time for the Government of National Unity (GNU). The ANC no longer has a majority in Parliament, which means they can't just vote this away like they did before.
The President’s new partners in the GNU—including the DA, the IFP, and the PA—are now in a very difficult position. In the past, they were the ones shouting the loudest for Ramaphosa to be impeached. But now that they are in government with him, will they still vote to investigate him?
One leader, Ganief Hendricks of Al Jama-ah, has already said the GNU will stand by the President. But the DA and others have been strangely quiet. They know that if they vote to protect Ramaphosa, their voters might never forgive them. But if they vote to impeach him, the whole government could collapse.

Julius Malema’s Big Win

For Julius Malema and the EFF, this is a massive victory. They have been protesting outside the court for months, demanding a ruling. Today, they got exactly what they wanted.
"The law has caught up with the Buffalo," one EFF supporter shouted outside the court. The party is already calling for the impeachment inquiry to start immediately. They want to know where the money came from, why it was in a sofa, and why it wasn't reported to the Reserve Bank.

What Happens Now?

The case now goes back to the National Assembly. A new committee will likely have to be formed to look at the evidence. This time, the President won't be able to hide behind a simple majority vote.
Legal experts say this could take months, or even years, to resolve. But the political damage is already done. Ramaphosa is now the first sitting President in South African history to have a court rule that his impeachment process was blocked illegally.

The "Buffalo" Under Pressure

President Ramaphosa has always said he is "innocent" and that he will "respect the law." Today, he has no choice. His office has released a short statement saying they are "studying the judgment."
But as the pressure builds, many are wondering if this is the end of the road for the man who promised to clean up South Africa. He came to power promising to end corruption, but now he is at the centre of the biggest corruption scandal in years.
South Africa is watching. The world is watching. And the sofa in Limpopo is still holding its secrets.
