Heat Wave Alert for Northern Cape, Free State, and North West
Northern Cape – Residents in parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, and North West are being advised to prepare for extremely high temperatures as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heat wave warning. This heat wave is expected to persist until Friday, 30 January 2026.
Meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela reported that temperatures are set to soar, with Upington in the Northern Cape predicted to reach a scorching 40 degrees Celsius by Tuesday afternoon. Other towns will also experience significant heat, with De Aar expected to hit 36 degrees Celsius and Kimberley forecasting a high of 37 degrees Celsius.
“This heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in places over the Northern Cape, stretching into the Free State as well as the southern parts of the North West,” Thobela explained.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures during this heat wave. They recommend keeping cool, staying hydrated, and using sunscreen to protect against the intense sun.
