Cape Town – A suspected DOM Wesbank gang member appeared in court yesterday after being apprehended by police for brandishing a fake firearm. The arrest comes amidst heightened efforts by law enforcement to combat gang-related crime in the Mfuleni area.
The incident unfolded during late-night patrols on Friday when officers from the Mfuleni Crime Prevention Unit encountered the suspect on Misty Road. According to police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, the suspect drew what appeared to be a firearm and aimed it at the officers.
"As the officers approached, the suspect drew a black firearm and aimed it towards them," Constable Gwala reported. "With remarkable composure, the members tactically disarmed the individual, seizing the firearm, which was later revealed to be an imitation weapon."
The suspect was promptly arrested for possession of an imitation firearm and is expected to face charges in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court.
In a separate incident on the same night, police officers apprehended another individual believed to be affiliated with a gang. While patrolling Galvandale Street, officers spotted a male acting suspiciously.
"Upon noticing the police, the man attempted to flee," Constable Gwala explained. "However, quick-thinking officers pursued him and conducted a thorough search, uncovering a firearm without a serial number concealed in the seam of his pants."
The suspect was immediately arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm, further highlighting the unit's dedication to removing dangerous weapons from the streets. He also appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 January 2026 and was remanded in custody.
These arrests come as Kensington police investigate a drive-by shooting that left four men injured on Saturday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 09:44 on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Twelfth Street.
Constable Gwala stated that four men, aged between 26 and 32, were standing in the street when a white Toyota Etios with three occupants drove past and opened fire. One of the victims sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest, while the other three suffered injuries to their legs. A vehicle parked in the street was also damaged during the shooting.
The police are currently investigating four counts of attempted murder in connection with the drive-by shooting.
The recent surge in police activity underscores the ongoing battle against gang violence in Cape Town. Law enforcement agencies are committed to intensifying their efforts to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety and security of residents. The successful apprehension of suspects in possession of both imitation and illegal firearms sends a clear message that police are determined to crack down on gang-related crime and bring perpetrators to justice.
The investigations into both the drive-by shooting and the possession of illegal firearms are ongoing, and police are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in their inquiries. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kensington police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
