Cape Town – A party in Valhalla Park ended in tragedy early yesterday morning, leaving a family mourning the loss of a young man and another facing the consequences of a violent act. Kerwin Burt, 20, was allegedly stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors by a friend following what has been described as a "drunken argument".

The incident occurred at approximately 4.40am on Sunday in Valhalla Park, Kalksteenfontein. According to sources speaking to the Daily Voice, Burt and his friend had been drinking and became embroiled in a heated verbal exchange, which then escalated to violence, resulting in the fatal stabbing.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the stabbing incident are currently under investigation. "A 20-year-old male was found with a stab wound to the neck are under investigation. Bishop Lavis police registered a murder case for investigation. He was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel," Van Wyk stated.

He further detailed the initial police response, saying: "According to reports SAPS members received a complaint of the body lying on the pavement at the mentioned address and on arrival the community pointed out the body of a male lying facing up with one stab wound in the right side of his neck."

The motive for the attack remains a key focus of the police investigation, Van Wyk added. "Be advised that a 18 year old suspect was arrested and will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court in Monday, 1 December on the mentioned charge."

Subcouncil 15 Chairperson Angus McKenzie commented on the tragic event, suggesting that the argument was fuelled by excessive alcohol consumption during a night of partying. McKenzie explained: "The victim died on the scene, and the perpetrator was immediately arrested and will now face a murder charge."

McKenzie further lamented the devastating outcome of the incident, stating: "A friendship that survived many things could not survive the combination of bad decisions and too many drinks and the consequences of this ‘hangover’ will last far longer than any night out."

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and friends, saying: "Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the victim, whose party ended in the most heartbreaking way imaginable."

Adding a poignant detail to the case, a source close to the investigation revealed that the suspect's mother had handed him over to the police. "It is very sad that two young people's lives are over. The perpetrator is 17 or 18 and the victim is 20 years old," the source said.

The source emphasised the need for youth to find non-violent means of resolving conflict, stating: "The mother of the perpetrator took him to SAPS when she heard what happened. We really need to teach our youth to use their words and not violence."

The loss of a young life in such a brutal manner serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of alcohol-fueled violence and the importance of conflict resolution skills. The community of Valhalla Park is left to grapple with the aftermath of this tragedy, as the police continue their investigation and the legal process unfolds.
