Johannesburg – A 32-year-old lawyer from Mthatha, Eastern Cape, has been slapped with a R40,000 fine or 24 months' imprisonment after being caught driving at a staggering 222km/h in a 120km/h zone and fleeing from traffic officers. Monde Nzima was sentenced at the Scottburgh magistrate’s court on Monday.
Nzima was apprehended on August 2 after a high-speed chase on the N2. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport and human settlements, Siboniso Duma, has called on the Legal Practice Council (LPC) to investigate Nzima's conduct, questioning whether such behavior is acceptable from legal professionals.
Nzima was released on R3,000 bail on the day of his arrest and pleaded guilty to the offence in court on Monday. Half of his sentence was suspended for five years, on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
Duma emphasized the need for tough action against reckless drivers, stating that speedsters are causing significant suffering and socioeconomic struggles for many families. He added that the department is determined to ensure consequences for those who create orphans and widows through its "Zero Tolerance No Nonsense and Alufakwa" campaign.
