A witness at the Madlanga Commission has testified that criminal tycoon Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala secretly funded suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu's presidential ambitions, pouring hundreds of thousands of rands into his campaign. Witness C claimed Matlala admitted to contributing around R500,000 towards Mchunu’s campaign, covering expenses for ANC's January 8 celebrations in Cape Town.
The witness further alleged that Mchunu interfered in a police investigation after Matlala’s Pretoria home was raided in December 2024, using his connections to identify the officers involved. Information peddler Brown Mogotsi allegedly provided Matlala with details of the police vehicles, and Mchunu and Mogotsi then advised Matlala to open a theft case against the officers.
Witness C also claimed Matlala revealed his links to Mchunu and suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, saying he had been “used” to target Crime Intelligence head Lt-Gen. Dumisani Khumalo. Khumalo himself previously testified that Matlala funded Mchunu's delegates to ANC events and paid Mogotsi to leak police intelligence, which allegedly helped Matlala secure a R360 million state contract.
Mchunu has denied the allegations, stating that he never met Matlala. The ANC has yet to comment. The commission continues to hear testimony.
