Police have opened an inquest after a 17-year-old Grade 11 learner died on the premises of Strand Secondary School in Cape Town.
The learner, identified as Tapiwa, died during school hours on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown at this stage.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Strand police registered an inquest for investigation following the incident.
Twigg said the learner died at about 12:08 at a secondary school in Onverwacht Road, Strand.
“Strand police registered an inquest for investigation following the death of a 17-year-old-boy on Tuesday,18 August 2026, at about 12:08, at a secondary school in Onverwacht Road, Strand,” Twigg said.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
Following the learner’s death, Strand Secondary School principal Ms L Terhoeven sent a letter to parents and guardians confirming the incident and extending condolences to the family.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of our Grade 11 learners,” the letter read.
“At this stage, the circumstances and cause of the learner's death are not yet known.”
The school said forensic officials were on the premises conducting the necessary procedures.
“This is a very difficult and sad time for our school community, especially for the learner's family, friends, classmates and educators,” the principal said.
“We ask you to please keep the learner's family in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time.”
The school also expressed its condolences to Tapiwa’s family and loved ones.
“Our sincere condolences go out to the family and loved ones of our learner,” the letter stated.
“May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time.”
After the incident, the school issued an immediate dismissal notice and asked parents and guardians to make arrangements for learners to get home safely.
News of Tapiwa’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes and condolences on the school’s social media pages.
A family member wrote: “No words can describe how we are feeling as a family. Rest easy my boy, you will be forever missed.”
The school also posted a tribute in memory of Tapiwa.
“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure,” the school said.
“You were more than a learner, you were a friend, a brother and a part of our school family. Your kindness, smile and spirit will never be forgotten. You will forever live in our hearts.”
The learner’s death has left the Strand Secondary School community in mourning.
Classmates, educators, relatives and community members have continued to share messages of grief and support for the family.
Authorities have not yet released further details about what happened before the learner died.
The post-mortem is expected to help establish the cause of death.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
At this stage, no foul play has been confirmed, and the exact circumstances surrounding Tapiwa’s death are still being investigated.
The school has asked the community to keep the learner’s family, friends and classmates in their thoughts during this difficult time.
