A 66-year-old scholar transport driver has been charged with the rape of a three-year-old child, an incident that has sparked outrage and concern in Limpopo. The man, whose name is being withheld until he has entered a plea, was arrested on Monday and appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the arrest followed preliminary investigations that revealed the man, who is married to a crèche owner and responsible for transporting children, brought the child home late on the day in question. The details emerging from the investigation paint a disturbing picture of alleged abuse of trust.

The alarm was raised when the child's guardian noticed something was amiss. “The guardian later noticed that the child appeared restless,” Colonel Ledwaba explained, highlighting the initial signs that something was wrong.

The situation escalated quickly as the child's condition worsened. “Subsequently, the victim began complaining of pain. The guardian immediately took her to a medical facility, where it was confirmed that the child had been raped,” Ledwaba confirmed, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The case was initially reported at Botlokwa SAPS before being transferred to the Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation and handling. This transfer highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the case and the need for specialised expertise in dealing with such sensitive matters.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the officers involved for their swift action. “I commend the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for their swift and professional response in apprehending the suspect," she stated, emphasising the importance of a rapid response in cases involving vulnerable children.

Hadebe further assured the public that justice would be served. "We will ensure a thorough investigation, the perpetrator is held accountable, and the victim is supported and protected at every step," she said, underscoring the commitment to both justice and the well-being of the victim.

The commissioner also spoke passionately about the need to protect children. "Only through a relentless pursuit of justice can we begin to heal the scars of violence and ensure that no child ever faces such suffering again,” Hadebe added, reflecting the deep concern and determination to prevent future incidents.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye has urged communities to take proactive measures to safeguard children. She emphasised the need for thorough background checks and continuous monitoring of individuals entrusted with the care and transportation of children. This call to action highlights the importance of preventative measures in protecting vulnerable members of society.

The accused remains in custody until Wednesday, when he is expected to apply for bail. The community awaits further developments in the case, with many expressing outrage and demanding justice for the young victim. The case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children and the need for constant vigilance and protection.
