Camperdown, KwaZulu-Natal – A BMW superbike rider has died following a head-on collision with an SUV in Camperdown on Wednesday. The accident occurred at the intersection of Old Main Road and Wood Circle Road, in the Umgungundlovu District, northwest of Durban.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, described the scene as one of "carnage" upon their arrival. Paramedics discovered the biker, a man in his thirties, lying on the roadway. Tragically, he had sustained major injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Jamieson confirmed that the driver of the SUV escaped the collision without any physical injuries.
"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find carnage as they found that a SUV had collided head on with a superbike. Paramedics found the biker a male in his thirties lying on the roadway and immediately assessed the man. Unfortunately, the biker had sustained major injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene," said Jamieson.
"At this stage, the events leading up to the crash are still unknown; however, police were in attendance and will be investigating further," added Jamieson.
This tragic incident follows another recent road-related event in Durban earlier this month, where a domestic dispute led to a near-fatal car crash.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were called to the scene of a single-vehicle accident involving a husband and wife. They discovered a brown Nissan Qashqai crashed into bushes, with the female passenger suffering back injuries and the male driver unharmed.
The 49-year-old woman alleged that her husband had threatened to end both of their lives after a heated argument during a drive from Cottonlands to Mhlasini. The argument reportedly began after she discovered female clothing in his car.
According to RUSA representatives, the husband allegedly attempted to crash the vehicle into a tree after making these threats. However, instead, the car struck a boulder, bringing it to a halt.
