Jub Jub Arrested After Alleged Kidnapping and Shooting Incident During Early Morning Edenvale E-Hailing Trip

A routine e-hailing trip in Edenvale took a violent turn on Sunday morning, allegedly escalating into a kidnapping and shooting incident that has now led to the arrest of media personality Molemo Maarohanye, widely known as Jub Jub.

While police have not officially named the suspect, eNCA reported that the 45-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident is Maarohanye. The broadcaster further reported that he is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to police, the incident occurred shortly after 7.30am when an e-hailing driver transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe outlined the sequence of events that allegedly unfolded after the drop-off.

“It is alleged that at approximately 7.30am, the e-hailing driver had transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale when he was confronted by the suspect, who accused him of being involved in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend.

“The suspect allegedly forced the e-hailing driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving. During the incident, the suspect reportedly discharged a firearm in the direction of the driver.”

The driver managed to escape unharmed and drove directly to a nearby police station, where he reported the matter.

Police said officers acted swiftly following the complaint and arrested the suspect shortly afterwards.

The 45-year-old now faces charges of kidnapping, unlawful discharge of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest, stating that investigations are ongoing.

The dramatic allegations have once again placed Maarohanye in the spotlight, marking the latest legal challenge for the television presenter and musician whose previous court battles drew intense public scrutiny.

His arrest comes just over a year after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that it had withdrawn all rape, attempted murder and assault charges against him.

Maarohanye had been accused by his ex-girlfriend of raping her in February 2022. She alleged that the offences occurred between 2006 and 2009.

Following her public statements on social media, three other women came forward with similar allegations.

At the time, Maarohanye handed himself over to authorities and appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. He was subsequently released on R10 000 bail.

The NPA’s decision to withdraw the charges last year marked a significant turning point in that case, although it did not entirely quiet public debate surrounding the allegations.

Sunday’s alleged incident has now triggered fresh legal proceedings.

According to police, the case centres on accusations that the suspect confronted the e-hailing driver over suspicions of a romantic relationship with his girlfriend. The alleged confrontation escalated to the point where the driver was reportedly forced into his own vehicle and prevented from leaving.

Mathe’s statement further alleges that a firearm was discharged in the direction of the driver during the altercation.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the driver was not injured. After managing to break free, he drove to a police station to report the matter, prompting officers to track down and arrest the suspect.

Kidnapping and the unlawful discharge of a firearm are both serious offences under South African law, carrying the potential for significant penalties if a conviction follows. The additional charge of defeating the ends of justice suggests investigators may be examining actions taken during or after the incident that could have interfered with the administration of justice.

Police have indicated that more information may emerge as the investigation progresses.

Maarohanye’s anticipated appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday is likely to attract public attention, given his prominence in the entertainment industry and his previous legal battles.

For now, authorities have emphasised that the matter remains under investigation and that no further details will be released at this stage.

As the case moves to court, the focus will shift to the legal process and the evidence surrounding the allegations that what began as a routine e-hailing trip escalated into a confrontation involving kidnapping and gunfire in a quiet Edenvale neighbourhood.
