Shebeshxt's Festive Season Gigs in Jeopardy as Attempted Murder Case Drags On
Limpopo's controversial Lekompo musician, Lehlogonolo Chauke, popularly known as Shebeshxt, faces the possibility of losing thousands of rands in performance bookings this festive season as his attempted murder case at the Polokwane High Court continues. The 30-year-old artist was remanded in custody following his arrest on Wednesday morning, and his case has been postponed to November 21st, casting a shadow over his hectic schedule of confirmed gigs throughout December.
Shebeshxt's legal representative, Lot Ramusi, confirmed that his client faces multiple attempted murder charges that are still under investigation. Ramusi stated, "We were contacted about two weeks ago that he was wanted by police. He even attempted to hand himself over, but they refused to arrest him. Until his arrest on Wednesday."
The arrest occurred during an intelligence-driven police operation in the upmarket suburb of Bendor, outside Polokwane, with Shebeshxt in the company of his legal representative. Detectives obtained a warrant of arrest linked to a case registered at Westernburg SAPS, leading to his apprehension.
The arrest is connected to a shooting incident that took place on October 19th along Witklip Street in Ladanna, outside Polokwane. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the arrest, stating, "The suspect allegedly got into a fight with another driver and fired multiple shots at another vehicle, injuring a 34-year-old man who was later taken to hospital with serious injuries."
The case was initially opened at Westernburg SAPS but was subsequently transferred to the Provincial Investigation Unit for further probing. Following the incident, police secured a warrant on Tuesday and executed it the following day, seizing two vehicles belonging to the suspect for forensic analysis.
If Shebeshxt fails to secure bail at his next court appearance, it will result in significant financial losses for the musician, who had a packed schedule of performances lined up from the end of November through the entire month of December. The postponement of the case has thrown his festive season bookings into disarray, leaving his fans and event organisers in a state of uncertainty.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe commended the investigation and operational teams for their swift action in apprehending the musician. "We are addressing this matter with utmost seriousness. And a dedicated team has been appointed to investigate every aspect of the case," said Hadebe. She added, "The South African Police Service reiterates that no one is above the law, regardless of their social standing."
The coming week will be crucial for Shebeshxt as he awaits his next court appearance. The outcome of the bail application will determine whether he can fulfil his performance commitments or remain in custody, potentially jeopardising his income and reputation.
