Police in the Western Cape have launched a murder and robbery investigation following the violent killing of 73-year-old Mariette Mouton inside her Bredasdorp home on Monday.
Investigators are reviewing local CCTV footage and processing forensic evidence gathered from the scene on Republic Street. As of now, no suspects have been apprehended.
Fatal Intrusion While Husband Worked in Garden
According to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, the perpetrator gained access to the house through an unlocked back door while Mouton's husband was working in the garden outside.
When her husband went indoors to look for her, he discovered her unresponsive body. Emergency assistance was called to the scene, where she was pronounced dead.
News24 reports that Mouton was bludgeoned with a blunt object. The suspect stole various items from the residence, including electronic devices, jewelry, clothing, and sharp tools from the kitchen and garage.
Local Leadership and Officials Condemn the Attack
Cape Agulhas Executive Mayor Raymond Ross expressed deep shock over the tragedy, confirming that police forensic teams combee the property late into the night for clues. Ross noted that authorities are actively reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area to identify potential suspects.
Anroux Marais, Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, highlighted the ongoing threat facing elderly residents in rural areas:
"In rural areas, isolation increases vulnerability, especially when opportunistic criminals target elderly people they perceive to be less able to defend themselves. The attack on Mariette Mouton in Bredasdorp is a painful reminder of that reality."
Marais emphasized the importance of local safety networks, including farm watches and neighborhood watches, to bolster vigilance alongside SAPS operations.
Ian Cameron, chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Police, described the crime as "barbaric" and urged law enforcement to give the investigation top priority. Cameron called for stricter legal measures, advocating that individuals convicted of violent crimes against women, children, and the elderly should be denied parole and serve true life sentences behind bars.
