A horrific mass shooting has claimed the lives of 11 people in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, prompting a massive law enforcement response. Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane has instructed KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to immediately trigger a 72-hour activation plan to track down the three gunmen responsible for the massacre.
The deadly incident occurred on Tuesday night during a gathering at a local residence. According to police reports, 14 people—13 men and one woman—were attending a party when three armed men arrived and opened fire on the group without warning.
Ten victims, including a pregnant woman, died at the scene. Four others were rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries, where one victim later succumbed to their wounds, bringing the total death toll to 11.
Investigators Trace Rivalry and Prior Radar Links
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the casualty numbers and noted that preliminary investigations suggest some of the victims were already known to police.
According to Crime Intelligence records, several individuals present at the gathering were previously on the radar for alleged involvement in illegal activities. While an official motive for the attack has not yet been established, investigators are strongly considering a violent feud between rival criminal factions as a potential factor behind the hit.
Police have withheld further details regarding the identities of the victims and specific leads to avoid compromising the active investigation.

Acting National Commissioner Dimpane expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of life, offering condolences to the grieving families and wishing a speedy recovery to the three surviving victims currently receiving medical treatment.
"There is no place in our communities for the senseless taking of human lives," Dimpane stated. "Police must act decisively, mobilise all available resources and pursue those responsible until they are brought before the courts."
Dimpane added that specialized investigative teams are currently following a promising lead that could prove crucial in identifying and detaining the perpetrators.
