Residents in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, woke up to scenes of pure destruction on Tuesday morning after fierce, high-velocity winds tore through their neighbourhood before sunrise. The sudden storm ripped entire roofs from houses and left debris scattered across streets, sparking fears among locals that a tornado had touched down in the area.

Emergency services received the initial call for help at approximately 04:30 as the violent weather struck properties centered around Maanskynkop Street. Teams from Mitchells Plain and Bellville were immediately dispatched to the scene, along with a specialized Incident Management Team Type 5, to assist affected families and secure the damaged structures.

Initial reports from response teams indicate that around 50 structures have sustained varying degrees of structural damage. While many families were left counting the costs of lost property, emergency officials confirmed that there were no fatalities reported at the scene. One adult female received medical treatment on-site for severe shock, though she ultimately declined transport to a hospital.

The City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre and local emergency crews remained on the scene throughout Tuesday morning to monitor the situation and conduct comprehensive structural evaluations.

Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson Charlotte Powell confirmed that officials were actively working to determine the full scale of the destruction.

“The extent of the damage is unclear. Assessments have yet to be completed. No injuries have been reported to our Disaster Operations Centre,” Powell stated during an update on the emergency response efforts.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse detailed the early morning response: “Upon arrival, crews found that several houses had sustained damage, with roofs having been blown off. At this stage, it is estimated that approximately 50 structures in and around Maanskynkop Street have been affected.”

Carelse added that one adult female was treated at the scene for shock, and emergency personnel stayed behind to ensure safety across the neighbourhood.
