Two members of the South African Police Service’s elite Anti-Gang Unit were gunned down on Friday evening while carrying out routine crime prevention patrols in Reiger Park, on the East Rand of Gauteng. The brutal attack, which police believe was a trap set by ruthless criminals, has plunged the nation into mourning and prompted acting national police leadership to launch a massive manhunt while begging local residents to break their silence and help bring the killers to justice.
The tragic incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 PM on Friday. According to Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the two officers were part of a dedicated crime prevention team patrolling the troubled Reiger Park neighborhood. While moving through the area, the officers heard the sharp cracks of gunfire echoing in the distance. Demonstrating immense bravery and a commitment to protecting the community, the officers immediately drove their vehicle toward the source of the shooting to investigate and protect innocent citizens. Tragically, that response appears to have been precisely what the criminals were waiting for.
Preliminary police reports indicate that as the officers approached the area, they were ambushed by heavily armed suspects who opened fire with devastating fury. The officers, caught in the crossfire of a premeditated trap, suffered fatal injuries. Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane expressed profound grief and anger over the killings, issuing an impassioned plea to the residents of Reiger Park to stand up against the criminals operating in their midst. In a direct and emotional message, Commissioner Dimpane emphasized that the killers are living among ordinary citizens who know who they are.
“We know that someone saw what happened. Someone knows who pulled the trigger, who planned this attack, or where the suspects are hiding,” Commissioner Dimpane said, her voice filled with urgency. “We are pleading with the community not to protect ruthless criminals who have no regard for human life. Your silence only emboldens those who continue to terrorise your community.”
Highlighting the human cost behind the uniform, Dimpane reminded the public that police officers are people with families who rely on them. “Our members are not just police officers. They are fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, and daughters who leave their homes every day knowing they may not return, all in the service of protecting South Africans,” she stated. “Today, two families are mourning because these brave officers answered a call for help.
