Teacher Shot Dead on Way to School in Tsakane, MEC Calls for Community Action
A teacher from Michael Zulu Primary School in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, was fatally shot on Monday morning while walking to work, in a killing that has left pupils, colleagues and the wider community reeling.
The educator was gunned down at about 07:00, less than a kilometre from the school, as he made his way to begin the school day. Police have launched an investigation, but the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
According to preliminary information provided by the Gauteng Department of Education, the teacher was walking with a group of pupils at the time of the attack.
The department said in a statement that the shooting occurred at the corner of Dunge and Masinga Streets, a short distance from the school grounds.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
MEC Expresses Shock and Sadness
Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile expressed shock and sadness following the killing, describing it as a devastating loss not only for the school but for society as a whole.
“The loss of an educator is a profound tragedy, not only for the school but for society. Educators dedicate their lives to nurturing, mentoring and preparing the next generation, and no family or school should have to endure such a devastating loss,” Maile said.
The department moved swiftly to implement its support measures. Officials confirmed that psychosocial support plans were activated immediately after the incident.
The District Integrated School Support Team was deployed to provide trauma debriefing to pupils affected by the shooting, particularly those who may have witnessed or been in close proximity to the attack.
“Further psychosocial support has been arranged, while the department is also working closely with the teacher’s family to ensure they receive the necessary counselling and support.”
The department has not released the identity of the teacher, pending the notification of family and further investigations.
Community Urged to Reject Criminality
Maile said the incident was a stark reminder that tackling crime requires a collective effort from communities, not only law enforcement agencies.
“The department continues to mobilise parents, communities, faith-based organisations, traditional leaders, community policing forums, civil society and all spheres of government to work together to combat criminality, protect learners and educators, and create safer environments in and around our schools.”
He called on residents to take an active stand against violent crime and to cooperate fully with authorities investigating the shooting.
Residents were urged to “cooperate with law enforcement authorities, report those responsible for violent crime and play an active role in safeguarding our schools and neighbourhoods”.
“An attack on an educator is an attack on the future of our children and on the values that bind our communities together,” he said.
Motive Still Unknown
At this stage, police have not indicated whether the shooting was a targeted attack or a robbery, nor have they confirmed whether any suspects have been identified.
The fact that the teacher was walking with pupils at the time of the attack has deepened concerns among parents and school staff about safety in areas surrounding schools.
Violent crime in residential neighbourhoods, particularly during peak morning hours when pupils and teachers are travelling to school, continues to pose a significant challenge in parts of Gauteng.
