GEORGE – A nationwide search for 17-year-old Sarah Rose Starrett has entered a critical new phase as investigators reveal that her disappearance from George in the Western Cape appears to have been meticulously planned for months. While the search has now extended to KwaZulu-Natal, authorities are battling a wave of false social media reports claiming the teenager has been found.
Sarah was last seen on Sunday, 19 July 2026, in Maitland Street, Blanco, a suburb of George. She had left her foster home for a scheduled weekly visit with her biological mother but failed to return by the 16:00 deadline, prompting her foster parents to alert the police.
A Calculated Exit
Investigations by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit have uncovered evidence suggesting that Sarah’s disappearance was not a spontaneous act but a carefully orchestrated plan involving her biological mother and her 22-year-old elder sister.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that Sarah’s elder sister, who had been working at a local restaurant, Texas Grill, resigned from her job just the night before Sarah went missing. It is alleged that the trio waited for the sister to receive her monthly salary to ensure they had the financial means to travel across provincial borders.
“Everything has been planned for a while,” a source told News24. “The sister resigned, and shortly after Sarah went missing, both the mother’s vehicle and another car believed to belong to the sister disappeared from the area.”
The KZN Connection
The search took a significant turn when police traced a vehicle linked to the disappearance—a white Daihatsu Terios with black bumpers—to KwaZulu-Natal. Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies confirmed that the search has now officially extended beyond the province’s borders.
“We are working with our counterparts across the country to locate Sarah,” Spies said. “We appeal to members of the public, particularly those in KwaZulu-Natal, to report any sightings of the vehicle or the teenager.”
Sarah was last seen dressed in black clothing. While her biological mother’s car has been located, the teenager and her relatives remain untraced.
A History of Hardship
The disappearance has shed light on a troubled family history. Sarah and her younger brother were placed in foster care approximately five years ago after being removed from their biological mother’s custody. At the time, the mother was reportedly living with the children inside her car in George.
Since the children were placed in care, the biological mother has allegedly continued to live a transient lifestyle, moving between different locations in George without a fixed address. Despite these challenges, an agreement allowed Sarah to visit her mother every Sunday—an arrangement that investigators believe was exploited to facilitate the current disappearance.
Interestingly, Sarah’s 22-year-old brother, who is currently a student, remains in his foster home and has not been reported missing.
The Battle Against "Fake News"
As the search intensifies, the George Community Policing Forum (CPF) has issued a stern warning against the spread of unverified information. False posters and social media posts claiming that Sarah has been found have been circulating widely, causing confusion and hampering the investigation.
George CPF chairperson Shawn Northey rubbished the claims, stating that the investigation remains active and Sarah has not been located.
“The spread of unverified or false information can seriously hinder an ongoing investigation that has already required thousands of rands in funding and significant operational resources,” Northey warned.
He further noted that spreading false information on social media could have serious legal consequences, including criminal charges.
