A wave of gun violence swept across parts of the Western Cape over the weekend, leaving nine people dead and several others injured in two separate shootings in Gugulethu and Kayamandi.
In the early hours of Monday morning, five young people were gunned down inside a house in NY 50, Gugulethu, Cape Town. Just hours earlier on Sunday evening, another four men were killed in a shooting incident in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, during which police officers also came under fire.
Authorities say investigations into both incidents are ongoing, with additional officers deployed to affected areas in a bid to prevent further bloodshed.
Five Young Lives Lost in Gugulethu
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in NY 50 in the early hours of Monday.
“Police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence where they found the victims with multiple gunshot wounds. Four men and one woman, aged between 19 and 23, were declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. A 20-year-old woman who sustained gunshot wounds was transported to a medical facility for treatment,” Traut said.
The deceased were all between the ages of 19 and 23, underscoring the devastating toll the attack has taken on young members of the community.
Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was deliberate and targeted.
“The preliminary investigation indicated that two armed men forced their way into a house in the area by kicking in the front door.
“The suspects allegedly demanded a firearm before opening fire on the occupants. They fled the scene and have not yet been arrested,” Traut said.
Police have not yet established a motive for the attack, and no arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
“To prevent any further violence and provide reassurance to the community, additional operational members have been deployed in the area while the investigation continues. The motive for the attack is yet to be established,” Traut added.
The brazen nature of the shooting has left residents reeling, with many expressing fear over escalating violence in the area.
Gunfire Erupts in Kayamandi
In a separate incident on Sunday evening, four people were killed and four others injured during a shooting in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch.
At approximately 17:35, Stellenbosch police were called to reports of gunfire in 7th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a man at the scene.
“While attending to the crime scene, the members heard further gunfire in the vicinity and immediately responded. As they approached the area, they encountered armed suspects who opened fire on them. The members returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee the scene,” said Traut.
The confrontation escalated rapidly, with police exchanging gunfire with the suspects.
During the incident, two SAPS members sustained gunshot wounds. Two members of the public — a man and a woman — were also injured. All four were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Four unidentified men were later found with fatal gunshot wounds.
A 9mm firearm was recovered at one of the crime scenes and has been seized for forensic analysis. Investigators will examine the weapon to determine whether it was used in the shooting and whether it may be linked to other crimes.
Police Vow to Act
Acting Western Cape police commissioner Major-General Luyanda Damoyi condemned the violence and vowed that law enforcement would pursue those responsible.
“This senseless violence has claimed several lives and left police officials and innocent members of the community injured. We will utilise every available resource to identify and apprehend those responsible. Those who attack police officers and terrorise our communities will face the full might of the law,” Damoyi said.
The incidents have once again placed the spotlight on gun violence in parts of the province, with communities calling for visible policing and swift justice.
Police have appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to arrests.
