In a statement issued to the Weekend Argus, the Williams family expressed their condolences to Koopman’s loved ones and addressed mounting public claims that reckless driving caused the tragedy.
The crash, which occurred earlier this week, has sparked intense discussion on social media and within the Mitchells Plain community. Police have since confirmed that a culpable homicide case has been opened by Lentegeur police, and investigations are ongoing.
A Family in Mourning
Arthur Williams’ family said their hearts are firmly with the Koopman family as they grapple with the devastating loss.
“Our hearts are with the family of Mr Emile Koopman. We are devastated by this loss, and there are no words for the pain they must be carrying. They are in our thoughts and our prayers every single day.
“We have been advised to allow some time before reaching out to the family directly, and we are respecting that guidance. But we want them to know that we are grieving alongside them, and that they are not out of our minds for a moment.”
The family acknowledged the depth of public anger following the crash, but appealed for understanding as both families come to terms with what happened.
“Our own family is also hurting during this time. But our thoughts remain, first and foremost, with the family who lost Emile. We hope that, in time, they will come to know how deeply sorry we are.”
What Happened on Tuesday
According to Western Cape police, the fatal collision took place when a Toyota Quantum crashed into two stationary vehicles at a red traffic light in Colorado Park.
Police said a Ford Figo and another vehicle were waiting at the light when they were struck from behind by the Quantum.
“Koopman died in the burning vehicle, while Williams and one passenger were transported to hospital for treatment.”
Koopman was unable to escape his vehicle after it caught alight. He died at the scene.
Williams sustained a fractured leg in the crash and is currently recovering. His 11-year-old daughter, who was travelling with him at the time, was also injured and is receiving treatment.
No arrests have been made, and police investigations continue.
“What Happened Was Not Reckless Driving”
In the days following the crash, allegations circulated widely on social media suggesting that reckless driving by the taxi driver had led to the fatal collision.
Williams’ family has strongly disputed those claims.
They revealed that he was not working at the time of the accident and had been taking his young daughter out for ice-cream.
The statement further disclosed that Williams has been living with epilepsy and suffered a seizure while driving.
“We also want to respond to what is being said publicly. What happened was not reckless driving. Arthur suffered a sudden seizure behind the wheel, a medical emergency he had no control over.
“He was not speeding, he was not rushing for passengers, and he was not on duty. He was with his young daughter, who was also hurt and is recovering. This was something that overtook him in an instant.”
The family maintains that the collision was the result of a sudden medical emergency rather than negligence.
Community Reaction
The crash has prompted strong reactions from members of the public, particularly given the fiery nature of the incident and the loss of life.
Residents in Mitchells Plain have expressed sorrow for the Koopman family, while others have questioned how such an incident could have occurred at a red traffic light.
Police have confirmed that a culpable homicide case has been opened, a standard procedure in cases where a death occurs as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
As part of the investigation, authorities will examine all aspects of the crash, including vehicle speeds, road conditions and the medical circumstances described by Williams’ family.
Two Families, One Tragedy
While public debate continues, both families now face the long and painful process of healing.
Koopman’s loved ones are mourning the sudden loss of a husband, father and son. At the same time, the Williams family is grappling with the physical injuries sustained in the crash and the emotional toll of being at the centre of a fatal incident.
The Williams family has indicated that they intend to reach out directly to the Koopman family once they have been advised that it is appropriate to do so.
For now, they say they remain focused on recovery and reflection.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information about the collision to come forward.
As Mitchells Plain reflects on a tragic week, the focus remains on accountability, healing and clarity — and on two families bound together by a single, devastating moment at a red traffic light.
