Broom Assault Turns Deadly: Grade 10 Learner Dies After Alleged Cellphone Dispute – WCED Pushes Ahead With Hearing in Bellville South School Death — Even If Accused Fled SA

The Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) says it will continue with disciplinary proceedings against a learner accused of killing a fellow pupil at Bellville South High School — even amid unconfirmed reports that he may have fled the country.

The incident occurred on 11 June 2026, when a Grade 10 learner allegedly assaulted another learner during a confrontation at the school.

The victim later died in hospital from injuries sustained after he was reportedly beaten over the head with a broom.

It is understood that the two learners were allegedly involved in a gestryery over a stolen cellphone.

Suspension and Disciplinary Process

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that the accused learner was suspended following the death and that disciplinary processes are under way.

“The hearing will resume once schools reopen,” Hammond said.

“If the learner is not in attendance, the school can proceed with the disciplinary process, provided the notice was properly served and due process was followed.”

Hammond added that the department cannot confirm reports that the learner has left South Africa.

She also stated that the WCED is not in a position to disclose the learner’s immigration status or confirm speculation that he may have been undocumented.

Police Investigation Ongoing

Following the tragic incident, Western Cape police registered a murder case for investigation. At the time, no arrests had been made.

When approached for comment regarding rumours that the suspect may have slipped out of the country, police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said:

“Kindly be advised that the matter you are referring to is still under investigation.”

Authorities have not provided further details at this stage.

Community Shock

The incident has left the Bellville South community shaken, with learners and parents grappling with the violent circumstances that led to the Grade 10 learner’s death.

While the criminal investigation continues, the WCED maintains that its internal disciplinary process will proceed in line with policy — even if the accused learner is not physically present.

For now, both the education department and police say investigations are ongoing.
