A quiet Tuesday morning in Silverton was shattered by the sound of heavy gunfire as a gang of ruthless criminals attempted a daring cash-in-transit robbery. The attack, which involved high-calibre weapons including AK-47 rifles, was narrowly foiled by the quick thinking of a brave security officer. Gauteng police have since confirmed the arrest of two men, aged 47 and 52, following a dramatic pursuit that led authorities to a residential property in Nellmapius.
The violence broke out after a security officer had completed a routine cash collection from a local gambling establishment. As the officer walked towards his company vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, he was suddenly ambushed by a group of armed men. Without warning, the suspects opened fire, sending bullets flying across the area.
Police spokesperson confirmed the details of the terrifying encounter. "It is alleged that a security officer had collected cash from the gambling establishment and proceeded to the driveway where the company vehicle was parked. As he was walking towards the vehicle, he suddenly came under gunfire from armed suspects," the police stated.
Despite the intense pressure and the immediate threat to his life, the security officer did not panic. Realising that he was being targeted for the cash he was carrying, he made a split-second decision that saved both the money and likely his own life. He turned back and ran towards the safety of the cash office.
"The security officer acted swiftly by returning to the cash office, where he safely secured the money," the police added. His actions left the robbers empty-handed. Seeing that their plan had failed and that the alarm was being raised, the suspects scrambled back into their getaway vehicle—a gold Volkswagen Amarok double-cab bakkie—and sped away from the scene.
When police officers arrived at the gambling establishment shortly after the attack, they found a scene that looked like a war zone. The ground was littered with evidence of the gang's intent to kill. Investigators recovered multiple spent cartridges, including ammunition from AK-47 assault rifles and nine 9mm cartridges. The presence of such heavy weaponry has raised serious concerns about the level of violence criminals are willing to use in these types of robberies.
The search for the suspects began immediately. Information about the gold Volkswagen Amarok was broadcast to all units in the area. It wasn't long before members of the Highway Patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description. A high-speed chase followed as the suspects tried to lose the police in the streets of Pretoria.
The pursuit eventually led officers to a house in Nellmapius. There, they found the gold bakkie parked inside a locked garage. It was clear that the suspects were trying to hide the vehicle and themselves from the law. Police did not hesitate and moved in to search the property.
Inside the house, officers made further disturbing discoveries. In one of the rooms, they found pistol ammunition. Even more shocking was the discovery of live R5 rifle ammunition, which had been carefully hidden inside a shoebox. This confirmed that the gang had access to a variety of powerful firearms.
During the raid, one suspect was found hiding inside the house and was immediately taken into custody. However, the second man tried to make a break for it. He fled the property and attempted to hide in another residence a few doors down. His attempt to escape was short-lived, as the Highway Patrol members tracked him down and arrested him as well.
"One suspect was found inside the house and arrested by Highway Patrol members. A second suspect was located a few houses away, where he had allegedly hidden inside another residence. He was also arrested," the police confirmed.
The two arrested men are now facing a long list of serious charges, including attempted robbery, attempted murder, and the illegal possession of ammunition. They are expected to make their first appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
While the two arrests are a significant victory for the police, the investigation is far from over. Authorities are still working to determine if there were other members of the gang involved in the attack and where the heavy weapons used in the shooting are being kept.
The incident has once again put the spotlight on the bravery of security officers who face these life-threatening situations every day. It also highlights the effectiveness of the Highway Patrol and the importance of quick community reporting in tracking down violent criminals.
Gauteng police have assured the public that they will continue to pursue all leads. "Investigations into the incident are continuing," they said, as they look to bring everyone involved in this brazen attack to justice. For now, two dangerous men are off the streets, and a large sum of money remains safe, thanks to a security officer who refused to become another statistic in South Africa's ongoing battle against cash-in-transit crime.
