A family gathering in Hennenman, Free State, turned into a scene of devastation on Sunday morning when a 47-year-old police officer allegedly opened fire, killing three people and injuring two others before taking his own life. Among the dead are his girlfriend’s mother and her uncle, with a 25-year-old woman also declared deceased at the scene.
Police said the officer, a rural safety coordinator, had reported for duty at Hennenman police station on Saturday afternoon. By Sunday morning, according to preliminary information, he drove to a plot searching for his girlfriend. “After failing to locate her, he and the girlfriend’s uncle proceeded to another location where the uncle indicated that there was an event taking place and several family members were in attendance,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo.
What unfolded next was rapid and fatal. “Upon arrival at the place, and after being informed that the girlfriend was not there, an argument allegedly ensued, during which the [police officer] allegedly opened fire,” Mbambo said.
“Three victims – the girlfriend’s mother, her uncle and a 25-year-old woman – were declared dead at the scene. Two other victims sustained gunshot wounds. One was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, while the other sustained a graze wound and was treated at the scene,” Mbambo added.
It is alleged the officer then shot and killed himself. “The motive for the incident is currently unknown and remains the subject of an ongoing investigation,” Mbambo said.
Senior leadership in the province moved swiftly to denounce the killings and outline next steps. Free State South African Police Service (SAPS) commissioner Lieutenant-General Thabang Lesia expressed sympathy and anger in equal measure. “This is a deeply disturbing and senseless incident that has left several families devastated.
“While the circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain under investigation, there can be no justification for such conduct. The SAPS in the Free State remains committed to accountability and to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and integrity among its members,” said Lesia.
In keeping with procedure when police are implicated, independent oversight has been brought in. “Cases of murder, attempted murder and an inquest will be registered and investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate,” Mbambo added.
Witness accounts gathered in the hours after the shooting are being collated by investigators to map the precise sequence of events. What is known from official statements is that the officer’s search for his girlfriend led him first to a plot and then to a second location where family members had gathered for an event. There, after being told the girlfriend was not present, a heated exchange is said to have escalated into gunfire. The casualties include direct relatives of the girlfriend – her mother and her uncle – along with a 25-year-old woman whose identity had not been formally released at the time of publication.
Paramedics declared three victims dead at the scene. Two other attendees were injured: one sustained wounds serious enough to warrant urgent transport to a local hospital; the other suffered a graze wound and received treatment on site. Police did not immediately provide updates on the hospitalised victim’s condition.
The officer’s role as a rural safety coordinator adds another layer to the tragedy. Such posts are typically focused on crime prevention partnerships and rapid response in outlying areas. The fact that a serving member, recently on duty, is alleged to have carried out the shooting will sharpen scrutiny on stress, conflict management, and firearm control protocols within the service. Lesia’s pledge of accountability signals that internal assessments may follow alongside the IPID probe.
Hennenman, a farming town in the Lejweleputswa District, is no stranger to family-centred community life, where gatherings draw extended relatives across several homesteads. The presence of multiple family members at the event underscores how quickly domestic or relationship disputes can turn catastrophic when firearms are introduced. While police have been careful not to ascribe a motive at this stage, the emphasis on an argument and the officer’s search for his girlfriend points investigators toward a domestic-relationship nexus rather than a broader criminal plot.
In the coming days, IPID will lead the forensic and testimonial work: ballistics analysis, the recovery and examination of the weapon or weapons used, mapping of bullet trajectories, and the timing of shots; interviews with those present before, during and after the argument; and the retrieval of any relevant communications or duty records that may provide context. The inquest component will focus on the alleged suicide, while the murder and attempted murder dockets will document each victim’s injuries and the legal case narrative.
Funeral and cultural protocols for the three deceased will now be planned amid acute grief. Families linked through the girlfriend’s lineage must contend not only with the sudden loss of a mother and an uncle but also with the trauma of a young woman’s death in their midst and the injuries to two others. Community support networks – faith groups, counsellors, and neighbours – routinely step in after such incidents, but the involvement of a police officer as the alleged perpetrator often leaves communities with deeper questions about trust and safety.
The SAPS has encouraged anyone with further information to assist investigators. While the official line remains that “the motive for the incident is currently unknown,” the breadth of the IPID mandate means any contributing factors – prior threats, disciplinary records, domestic complaints, or mental health concerns – are likely to form part of the comprehensive investigation file.
For now, the facts are stark and uncontested in their outline: a 47-year-old officer, a family function in Hennenman, a confrontation, a burst of gunfire that left three people dead and two wounded, and an alleged suicide that ended the shooting. Between those waypoints, detectives will seek to fill in every minute, every witness account, and every physical trace left behind – work that, authorities say, is already under way.
