Mass Funeral for Family Wiped Out in Gruesome Kidnap-Murder Plot – How a Trusted Worker Allegedly Led a Gang to Massacre the Monswamy Family

0
NEWARK, KWAZULU-NATAL – The quiet community of Newark on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast has been shattered by a tale of ultimate betrayal and senseless brutality. As the town prepares for a mass funeral this Sunday, new and chilling details have emerged about the final moments of the seven members of the Monswamy family, who were allegedly kidnapped and executed by a gang led by a former employee.
The victims—ranging from a 20-year-old student to an 83-year-old grandmother—were snatched from their home in Newtown on Tuesday night. Their bodies were discovered the following day, dumped in a secluded veld in Melmoth, nearly 100 kilometres away. The tragedy has left the region reeling, as investigators piece together a crime that combined calculated robbery with stomach-churning violence.

A House of Horrors

The nightmare began at approximately 10:00 pm on Tuesday. According to neighbours and police reports, a gang of armed men entered the Monswamy residence, a home known for its hospitality and kindness. The victims have been identified as Alan Monswamy, 52, a well-known local businessman, and his wife Sandy, 57. Their children, Kraidon, 26, and Shamaria, 20, were also taken, along with elderly relatives Gonosagren Padayachee, 51, Mooniamma Padayachee, 78, and Mariama Happanah, 83.
The discovery was made on Wednesday morning when the family’s domestic worker arrived for her shift. She found the front door ajar and the interior ransacked. "The helper came to us and said the house was open and ransacked," a neighbour told reporters. "It is truly shocking that it happened right under our noses and we did not know."
The alarm was raised when Kraidon’s girlfriend tried to reach him and received no response. By the time the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrived, the family and their vehicle were gone.

The Long Road to Melmoth

The investigation, led by the Provincial Tracking Team and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, moved with startling speed. By Wednesday afternoon, three suspects aged 21, 26, and 28 were in custody. Crucially, police revealed that one of the suspects was a former employee of the family—a man who knew the layout of the house and the routines of the people inside.
Under interrogation, the suspects led police to a remote area in Melmoth. There, the horrific scale of the crime was revealed. The victims had not merely been robbed; they had been subjected to an ordeal of terror. Reports indicate that some were shot, while others were stabbed. Most disturbingly, evidence has emerged that the youngest victim, 20-year-old Shamaria, was raped at the family home and again at the site where they were killed.
"They were such good people," said Julie Gengadu, the family’s next-door neighbour. "They were helpful and kept to themselves. We did not know that they were kidnapped on Tuesday night. It is believed that the family was taken at 10 pm in the back of a bakkie."

A Family Haunted by Tragedy

For the survivors and close friends, the massacre is a double blow of grief. Just two years ago, Alan and Sandy Monswamy lost their daughter, Ricquelle, in a horrific car accident. The family was still in the process of healing when this latest atrocity occurred.
"They were loving and kind people," a close family friend said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "It is terrible what happened to them because they lost their daughter just two years ago. Now, they have been killed. It is shocking, especially the manner in which they were killed."
The motive for the attack appears to be a combination of robbery and a twisted sense of grievance or opportunism by the former worker. While the family's vehicle has been recovered, the emotional scars on the community remain wide open.

A Province Under Siege

The Newark massacre is the latest in a string of mass killings that have plagued KwaZulu-Natal in recent months. KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, who visited the grieving relatives this week, expressed his "deepest condolences" and called for the harshest possible sentences for the perpetrators.
"The brutality of this crime is a stain on our province," Ntuli said. "That an elderly woman of 83 and a young woman of 20 could be treated with such disregard for human life is a sign of a deep sickness in our society."
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and other political organisations have also condemned the killings, citing a "lack of clarity" regarding the leadership of the provincial police as a contributing factor to the rising tide of violent crime.

The Final Farewell

Stanger High School sportsground will serve as the venue for a mass funeral service on Sunday morning. Beginning at 9:00 am, hundreds of mourners are expected to gather to pay their respects before the family is taken to the Stanger Crematorium for their final rites.
For the residents of Newark, the silence left by the Monswamy family will be a haunting reminder of the night that crime came to their doorstep. As the three suspects prepare to face the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court next week, the cry for justice is louder than ever.
