Hero Mom Dies Trying to Save Newborn Baby in Springs House Fire!

A Springs family is reeling after a young mother and her four-day-old baby girl died when their home on the East Rand caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Before she succumbed, 31-year-old Moipone Ramasedi is believed to have made a desperate attempt to save her newborn, baby Naledi, by passing her out of a window to neighbours through burglar bars as flames and smoke engulfed the house.

What exactly sparked the blaze remains unclear, and the family say they are still piecing together the final moments inside the modest Springs home. For now, they are left with a harrowing account of a mother’s last act: trying to push her child to safety while she herself was trapped.

Ramasedi’s uncle, Daniel, told Sowetan that the family was woken in the early hours of the morning by a call that changed everything.

Ramasedi’s distraught uncle, Daniel, told Sowetan they received a call at 3am informing them that Ramasedi had died in a fire and Naledi was in hospital but badly injured.

“At this point, everything is still speculation, and that is why we want to give access to the police to know what happened. But what we do know is that we just got a call in the morning from the partner saying the house had burnt down, and my niece unfortunately did not make it. The baby was in the hospital but was not looking good,” he said.

“We went straight to Far East Hospital, and when we got there, we were met by the doctor, who took us through everything, and unfortunately, the baby also passed on as well.”

By the time the family arrived at Far East Rand Hospital, any faint hope that Naledi might survive had faded. Doctors explained the extent of the baby’s injuries, and soon after, confirmed that she too had died.

According to Daniel, Ramasedi had passed Naledi to neighbours through window burglar bars as flames and smoke spread through the home.

Neighbours, alerted by screams and the glow of the fire, are understood to have rushed to the windows, where Ramasedi tried to hand the newborn out between the bars. Naledi was taken to hospital from the scene but could not be saved.

While the details of how the fire started remain under investigation, the impact on the family has been immediate and profound. Ramasedi’s mother, who had been preparing for a family ceremony this weekend, has been left so traumatised that she has been admitted to hospital.

He said the incident has left the family distraught, especially Ramasedi’s mother, who had to be admitted to hospital.

“What makes it even more difficult is that we had a ceremony planned for this Saturday to unveil our mother’s [Ramasedi’s grandmother’s] tombstone. The preparations were obviously derailed by this,” he said.

Instead of gathering to unveil a tombstone and celebrate the memory of an elder, the family is now planning two more funerals. The timing has deepened their sense of disbelief: in the space of a few days, they have gone from welcoming a new baby, to preparing to bury both mother and child.

Ramasedi also leaves behind a 12-year-old daughter, who managed to escape the blaze with only minor injuries.

The young girl’s survival is a rare mercy in a story otherwise defined by loss. Family members say she is physically stable but deeply shaken by what she witnessed. Support structures, including relatives and community members, are rallying around her as she begins to process the trauma of losing both her mother and baby sister.

For now, questions about what exactly happened inside the burning house remain unanswered. Daniel says the family is determined to allow investigators full access so they can establish the cause of the fire and the sequence of events that followed.

“We hope to get to the bottom of what really happened. The fact that she was able to try to take the baby out through the window tells us that maybe she could have come out as well. But obviously, she was weak and probably not strong enough to run out,” he said.

“We’re hoping that the police, especially forensic experts, will go deep into this to establish what caused the fire.”

Those close to Ramasedi point out that she had given birth only four days earlier and would still have been in a fragile physical state. Family members believe this, together with the rapid spread of smoke and flames, may have left her unable to escape after ensuring that Naledi had at least a chance at survival.

Gauteng police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident. Specialists are expected to examine the property to determine whether the fire was caused by faulty wiring, a candle, an appliance or any other source.

Gauteng police spokesperson Capt Tintswalo Sibeko said an inquest docket has been opened.

An inquest allows authorities to establish the precise cause of death and the circumstances around it, rather than immediately treating the matter as a criminal case. Depending on the forensic findings, the investigation may later be escalated if any negligence or foul play is suspected.

In the meantime, the family is trying to navigate an avalanche of practical and emotional demands: arranging burials, supporting an injured and hospitalised grandmother, comforting a surviving child and fielding calls from relatives, friends and community members seeking answers.

Daniel says they are clinging to the hope that a thorough investigation will at least provide some clarity, even if it cannot bring back Moipone and baby Naledi.

The story of Ramasedi’s final actions — passing her baby through window burglar bars as smoke and heat intensified — has already struck a chord in the larger community, where neighbours and extended family have begun to share their own fragments of that night: the smell of smoke at 3am, the frantic knocking on doors, the sound of sirens as emergency services raced to the scene.

For those closest to her, however, the focus is now on honouring a mother who, in her last moments, appeared to act with instinctive courage, and on caring for the 12-year-old girl who survived — the only child left to carry her memory forward.
