Separate Funerals Held for Tongaat Father and Daughters After Alleged Poisoning

Mourners gathered at two separate funerals in Tongaat yesterday – one for Leon Munusamy, and another for his two young daughters, Amelia Hope (6) and Elena Faith (4), whose lives he is alleged to have taken.

The dual services captured the sorrow and complexity of a family devastated by tragedy.

At True North Church, family and friends paid emotional tribute to the little girls, remembered as “bright lights” who filled every room with laughter and love. The atmosphere was heavy with grief as speakers described their innocence and the joy they brought to those around them.

Munusamy’s funeral was held separately, at the AFM Church in Tongaat.

Alleged poisoning

Amelia and Elena were allegedly poisoned, their bodies discovered at a home in Sastri Circle, Belvedere, by a private security company after their mother, Nicole, raised the alarm when they failed to arrive at school on Tuesday.

The girls had been in the care of their father. Munusamy’s body was found nearby in the same residence. The circumstances have shocked the Tongaat community, which is still struggling to come to terms with the deaths. It is believed that Munusamy and his wife were separated.

‘Our little lights’

At the children’s funeral, cousin Carmel Leigh described Amelia and Elena as deeply affectionate and loving.

She said Amelia was a “bright and beautiful soul” who brought endless love, laughter and light into every life she touched.

“From the time Amelia was born she had a special way of bringing everyone together. The room always felt lighter and everything else didn’t seem to matter,” she said.
Amelia loved playing games, watching YouTube vlogs and finding happiness in simple joys, often telling her mum how much she loved and missed her – even when she was right next to her. She also loved helping with chores.

Carmel said Elena Faith, in her short but beautiful life, “filled our world with a light that would never fade”.

Her laughter was “soft and joyful”, her smile “pure sunshine”, and her tiny hands “held so much love that was always enough for everyone”. Elena delighted in small things – finishing all the cooldrink, following her mum everywhere and showering her with kisses on the hand.

“Though her time here was far too brief, the love she gave us will last a lifetime… She will always be our little light, sweetest blessing and our angel,” Carmel said.

Mother’s tribute

In a tribute read on behalf of their mother Nicole, she said the girls were more than just Amelia and Elena:

“To us these beautiful little girls were not just Amelia and Elena, but Hope and Faith, and in every sense of the word their lives reflected these anchoring principles that we are required to live by every day.”

She described Faith as bursting into the world with a fiery, feisty spirit, destined to be the fierce protector and playmate of her older sister.

The funerals closed with a sense of profound loss – and a community united in grief for two young lives gone far too soon.
