ZWELITSHA, Eastern Cape – A scene of horror unfolded at Ntabankulu Primary School in Zwelitsha this week, as a former teacher, out on bail facing sexual assault charges involving learners, unleashed a violent attack that left three dead, including himself. The incident has sent ripples of grief and disbelief throughout the community.
The initial reports indicated two fatalities, but the death toll has tragically risen to three. One of the educators who sustained injuries during the shooting succumbed to their wounds on Thursday. Another remains in a critical condition in hospital, battling for their life.
According to police reports, the former teacher, whose name is being withheld pending further investigation, forcibly entered the school grounds by cutting through the perimeter fence. Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the police spokesperson, detailed the sequence of events: "A former teacher at the school, who was out on bail for sexual assault charges involving learners, forcibly gained entry to the premises by cutting through the perimeter fence. The suspect proceeded directly to the school kitchen, where he opened fire on three educators."
The suspect's actions resulted in the immediate death of one teacher at the scene. The other two educators were rushed to hospital with critical injuries, but sadly, one of them has since passed away.
Following the shooting, the suspect turned the gun on himself. "Following this, the suspect shot and killed himself," confirmed Brigadier Gantana. He was declared dead at the scene.
The motive behind this shocking attack remains unclear, and police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. A key aspect of the investigation will focus on how the suspect was able to breach his bail conditions and gain access to the school premises.
Brigadier Gantana stated: "A full investigation into the circumstances of the attack is underway, including the suspect's breach of bail conditions."
The fact that the suspect was out on bail for sexual assault charges involving learners has added another layer of outrage and concern to this already tragic event. Questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the bail system and the safety of schools in the province.
