22-Year-Old Driver Arrested Following Vanderbijlpark Tragedy That Claimed 12 Learners’ Lives
A 22-year-old scholar transport driver has been arrested and is expected to appear at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court within the next 48 hours. The driver faces serious charges, including 12 counts of culpable homicide, in connection with a horrific crash that occurred on Fred Droste Road near the N1, claiming the lives of 12 schoolchildren.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that the driver was apprehended after being discharged from the hospital on Monday night. “The police have arrested the 22-year-old scholar transport driver who was involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 12 learners in Vanderbijlpark,” Masondo stated.
The tragic crash involved a minibus taxi and a side tipper truck and has left families in mourning as they grapple with the loss of their children. Masondo reported that, following a thorough investigation, it is confirmed that 12 learners died at the accident scene while five others were transported to nearby hospitals for medical care; one of these learners has since been discharged.
As the investigation unfolds, it has been reported that the driver of the truck, who was involved in the accident, escaped unharmed. However, a passenger in the truck sustained injuries and is receiving treatment. The police have initiated a thorough investigation and are actively collecting witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the fatal accident.
Masondo emphasised the gravity of the charges against the driver, stating that he faces counts not only of culpable homicide but also related to reckless and negligent driving. “After the police visited the hospitals and the mortuary to verify the number of fatalities and injuries, it can be confirmed that 12 learners died at the accident scene,” he reiterated, highlighting the tragic loss of life.
