LEPHALALE, LIMPOPO – Just a day after Christmas, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) intercepted a staggering 1,174 undocumented Zimbabwean nationals attempting to enter South Africa illegally through the Groblersbridge Border Post, near Lephalale in Limpopo. The incident, which occurred on 26 December 2025, has highlighted a new challenge for border control during the festive season.

According to SANDF spokesperson Captain Moses Semono, this marks an unprecedented surge in illegal border crossings during this time of year. "On 26 December 2025, soldiers intercepted and arrested 1,174 undocumented persons from Zimbabwe attempting to enter South Africa through illegal border crossings," Semono stated. "This marks the first time our members have had to manage such a massive influx during this period of the festive season."

The situation was further complicated by the unexpected aggression displayed by some of those attempting to cross the border. During the interception, Rifleman T.M. Mokoena of the SANDF sustained a stab wound to his forearm while defending himself against one of the undocumented individuals.

"Compounding the situation was the uncharacteristic aggressiveness of the individuals involved. Rifleman T.M. Mokoena sustained a stab wound to his forearm while defending himself against an undocumented person who attempted a life-threatening assault," Semono explained.

Despite the serious nature of the attack, Rifleman Mokoena's training allowed him to neutralise the threat without resorting to lethal force. "However, due to the high standard of training provided by the Defence Force, Rifleman Mokoena was able to thwart the danger and neutralise the threat without resorting to deadly force," Semono added.

Rifleman Mokoena received immediate medical attention at the scene. Captain Semono confirmed that the undocumented individuals were handed over to the South African Immigration Services in good health and without injury.

Colonel Dikgabane Herold Tladi, the Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, praised the soldiers for their professionalism and restraint in handling the situation. "Colonel Dikgabane Herold Tladi, the Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, commended our soldiers for their restraint and professionalism, and wished Rifleman Mokoena a speedy recovery," Semono relayed.

The incident has raised concerns about border security and the increasing pressures faced by the SANDF during peak periods. Authorities are now reviewing strategies to manage similar situations in the future, ensuring the safety of both SANDF personnel and those attempting to cross the border illegally. The focus remains on maintaining a secure border while upholding human rights and adhering to international protocols.
