Seven Dead in Mpumalanga Head-On Collision; Another Body Recovered in Limpopo Crash
Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces are reeling from separate road accidents that have claimed multiple lives, prompting authorities to renew calls for increased vigilance on the roads. Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide in both incidents.
In the first incident, seven people were killed and one seriously injured in a head-on collision on the N4 between Machadodorp and Belfast in Mpumalanga. The crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, at approximately 01:00, when two sedans collided.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie confirmed that the surviving passenger is currently receiving medical treatment at Belfast Hospital. Macie extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Macie urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when driving at night when visibility is reduced. “We are again appealing to motorists to be extremely vigilant, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Roads are shared spaces, and drivers must do all in their might to prevent needless loss of life from deadly crashes,” he said.
In a separate incident in Limpopo, police have recovered the body of a seventh victim following a horrific motor vehicle crash that occurred on 24 December along the R518 near the Mogalakwena Bridge, between Tinmyne and Masodi Village.
According to police reports, the crash occurred at approximately 09:30 when a white Suzuki mini truck, travelling from Mokamole towards Mokopane, allegedly hit a bridge barrier and crashed.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba provided details of the initial response: “Four adult men and two adult women were certified dead at the scene.” He added that several others were injured: “Five adults and two children who sustained injuries were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.”
Following the initial crash, police divers launched search operations along the nearby river, amid concerns that additional occupants may have been swept away by the water. The search continued for several days, eventually leading to the discovery of another victim.
“On Friday, the body of a seventh male victim was discovered more than a kilometre from the original accident scene,” Ledwaba confirmed.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing as authorities work to determine the precise causes of the crashes. The police have opened cases of culpable homicide in connection with both the Mpumalanga and Limpopo accidents.
