10 people killed & 30 injured in N8 highway bus crash, another accident wipes all 5 family members

A dark cloud hangs over South Africa following two separate and devastating road accidents. The first, a collision between an Interstate bus and a truck on the N8 highway near Bloemfontein, has tragically claimed the lives of 10 people and left 30 others injured. The second, a head-on collision on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal, has wiped out an entire family of five, leaving two others injured.

The Free State accident occurred around 06:35 on Saturday morning, close to the RRR farming area, between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein. The wet weather conditions are believed to have played a significant role in the severity of the crash.

Sipho Towa, chairperson of the Free State Road Incident Management System, confirmed the tragic toll. “All 10 fatalities were adults, comprising seven males and three females, whilst 30 other individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical,” said Towa.

The injured required urgent medical attention across various facilities, with the most seriously wounded receiving priority treatment at specialist trauma centres. “Emergency medical services transported patients to three facilities across the region. Critically injured victims were taken to Braam Fischer Busamed Hospital and Pelonomi Trauma Hospital in Bloemfontein, while others were admitted to Botshabelo Hospital,” Towa explained.

Among the injured, six individuals suffered life-threatening injuries requiring immediate hospitalisation, while five others sustained moderate wounds and 19 passengers escaped with minor injuries from the early-morning accident.

Towa highlighted that the prevailing weather conditions at the time may have been a contributing factor to the accident’s devastating outcome. “The collision has resulted in significant traffic disruption, with lanes heading into Bloemfontein currently closed while emergency services continue operations at the scene,” he said.

The crash has created substantial delays for commuters and commercial traffic, with authorities urging drivers to find alternative routes until the highway reopens. Towa warned motorists to exercise extreme caution when travelling in the area due to the ongoing road closure and adverse weather conditions.

The timing of the accident proved particularly disruptive, occurring during peak morning travelling hours when traffic usually surges on this crucial transport corridor. “The incident occurred during the early morning commuter period when traffic volumes typically increase on routes leading into Bloemfontein,” Towa said. “The N8 route between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein is a major arterial road connecting communities in the Free State province, regularly used by commuters and commercial vehicles.”

Emergency crews remained at the crash site throughout the morning, coordinating rescue operations and clearing the wreckage from the busy highway. “[An] investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the collision is expected to follow once emergency operations are completed and the scene is secured,” Towa added. Officials have not provided a timeline for reopening the affected highway sections, with immediate priorities focusing on ensuring all casualties receive proper medical treatment.

While the Free State grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, KwaZulu-Natal is mourning the loss of an entire family in a separate horrific accident.

The Department of Transport and Human Settlements confirmed that a family of five was killed in a head-on collision on the N2 before the Umzumbe River bridge. Two other people were injured in the crash.

"Three children, aged 3-5, and adults believed to be the mother and the father, have died instantly. Other victims, a female and a 14-year-old male, have been rushed to the nearest hospital," said department MEC, Siboniso Duma. Duma sent his condolences to the families of those involved in the crash.

These devastating incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers on South Africa's roads and the importance of road safety. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during adverse weather conditions, and to adhere to all traffic regulations.

In a separate incident highlighting the carnage on the roads, a man in his 60s died following a crash in Bowen Avenue in Umbilo.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said paramedics arrived at the scene to find a bakkie had somehow flipped coming to rest against an electricity pole. "Immediately, the eThekwini Fire Department was dispatched to assist at the scene. Paramedics found the driver had been ejected from the wreckage on impact and sustained major injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing more that could be done and he was declared deceased," Jamieson said.

The man's wife was still inside the wreckage and emergency teams were able to get her out, stabilise her at the scene before rushing her to the hospital for further care.

The investigations into all these accidents are ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the exact causes and to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
