Delmas, Mpumalanga – The community of Delmas is reeling after the body of seven-year-old Thandolwethu Mahlangu was discovered in Delpark Extension 2 on Wednesday, prompting an urgent police manhunt for those responsible for her death.

The grim discovery was made on Tuesday morning, 12 November 2025, bringing a tragic end to the search for Thandolwethu, who had been reported missing by her mother, Ayanda Ngwenyama, just two days prior.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, Ms Ngwenyama reported her daughter missing at the Delmas Police Station on 11 November 2025. The distraught mother told police that Thandolwethu was last seen on 10 November at approximately 6pm. "It is alleged that the child went to her father’s house and did not return home," said Ndubane.

As news of Thandolwethu's disappearance spread, community members rallied together, launching an extensive search throughout the night. Despite their tireless efforts, they were unable to locate the missing child.

The following morning brought a sinister twist to the case. Ms Ngwenyama received a text message from an unknown number, making a chilling demand. "At around 07:00 the following morning, Ms Ngwenyama received a text message from an unknown number demanding R30 000, allegedly owed by the child’s father, in exchange for the child’s safety," Ndubane revealed.

In response, police immediately opened a missing person inquiry, and investigators worked tirelessly to trace the cellphone number used by the alleged kidnappers. Their investigation led them to the Botleng area, where they hoped to find answers.

Ndubane confirmed that investigators questioned loan sharks in the vicinity and visited several addresses linked to the investigation. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful in locating Thandolwethu or identifying the perpetrators.

The search for Thandolwethu took a devastating turn on Tuesday morning when her body was discovered at approximately 07:30 in Delpark Extension 2.

"Her body was discovered by a neighbour who was cleaning his yard when he noticed small legs protruding from underneath rubble behind a shack," Ndubane stated, his voice heavy with sorrow. Authorities were immediately called to the scene, where they confirmed the worst.

Police have launched a murder investigation and are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice. So far, the suspects remain unknown, and no arrests have been made.

The Saps acting provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed his outrage and condemnation of the heinous crime. "People have lost their sense of humanity. How can anyone kill an innocent young girl who had her whole future ahead of her? We will not rest until the suspect(s) are behind bars," said Mkhwanazi, vowing to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice.

Mkhwanazi has activated a 72-hour plan, mobilising all available resources to ensure the swift apprehension of those responsible for Thandolwethu's murder.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation.

Ndubane urged anyone with information to contact the branch commander, Lieutenant Colonel Victor Dibakoane, on 079 268 0040, or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be submitted via the MySaps App. All information will be treated with strict confidentiality, and callers may remain anonymous.

The tragic death of Thandolwethu Mahlangu has left a deep scar on the community of Delmas, and residents are united in their determination to see justice served.
