A stolen cellphone allegedly became the key clue that led police to four suspects after a hijacking near Cape Town International Airport, with a white Volkswagen Polo recovered in Bonteheuwel.
The four males, aged between 16 and 27, were arrested by Flying Squad members after police responded to a report of a hijacking on Monday afternoon.
They are expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once they have been charged.
Western Cape police said the suspects were arrested for hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. One of the accused is 16, and his identity cannot be published because he is a minor.
The arrests followed a rapid response to the reported hijacking, which took place near the airport on Monday, 7 September 2026.
SAPS spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said police received the report at about 17:15.
“Flying Squad members arrested four male suspects between the ages of 16 and 27 following a hijacking at the airport on Monday, 7 September 2026,” Gwala said.
“The team responded to reports of a hijacking at about 5.15pm.
“They rapidly intercepted the white VW Polo in Bonteheuwel and arrested the four male occupants for hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle.
“Once charged, the suspects will appear before the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court.”
The police statement did not provide details about the victim, the circumstances of the alleged hijacking or whether a weapon was used.
Those details will form part of the investigation and any evidence placed before court.
How The Cellphone Became A Clue
According to Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie, the suspects allegedly took the victim’s cellphone after making off in the vehicle.
McKenzie said the phone was not discarded or switched off. Instead, he claimed that it was used to take photographs or record video, creating a trail that helped investigators locate the suspects.
He shared footage of the arrests on social media and described the incident as an example of suspects making it easier for police to find them.
McKenzie said the cellphone became a digital breadcrumb that led investigators to Bonteheuwel.
The detail has not been independently confirmed in the police statement, and it remains part of the account provided by the ward councillor.
If confirmed by investigators, the alleged use of the phone could become an important part of the sequence that led to the arrests.
Cellphones can contain information about photographs, videos, location data, messages and recent activity. However, the meaning of that information depends on how it was obtained, preserved and linked to the people arrested.

Police Intercepted The Vehicle In Bonteheuwel
After receiving the report, Flying Squad members acted quickly and intercepted the white VW Polo in Bonteheuwel.
All four occupants were arrested at the scene.
The vehicle was allegedly the one taken during the hijacking and was recovered during the operation.
The arrests mean investigators can now focus on establishing the identity of each suspect and determining what role each person may have played.
The four suspects were arrested together, but that does not automatically mean they will face identical charges or that the State will allege that each person had the same role.
