BOTSHABELO, Free State – Nine suspects have been apprehended in Botshabelo in connection with a harrowing case involving kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and murder. The arrests, which took place on Monday, 14 July, followed a police crime intelligence-driven raid, according to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 46, are believed to be taxi drivers and taxi marshals operating in the area. They are expected to appear in the Botshabelo Magistrates Court on Thursday, 17 July.

The case first came to light on Monday, 30 June, when a 30-year-old man reported a shocking kidnapping incident at the Boithuso police station. According to the victim's statement, he and two others were abducted by a group of men.

Lieutenant-Colonel Covane explained that the victim alleges that they were taken to Modder River in Rustfontein, where they were stripped naked and subjected to a brutal assault. The assailants used their hands and various objects to inflict grievous bodily harm.

"The three victims were later separated, and only two were taken back and dumped outside Botshabelo," said Lieutenant-Colonel Covane. The third victim, identified as Sello Mokhele, 32, remained missing, prompting his family to file a missing persons report at the police station.

A dedicated Search Team of cops were immediately tasked with following up on information to locate the missing Sello Mokhele. The search efforts were concentrated along the Modder River. Tragically, divers eventually retrieved Mokhele's body from the river in Rustfontein.

The discovery of Mokhele's body led to the escalation of charges against the arrested suspects to include murder. The nine individuals now face a range of serious charges, including kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and murder.

The police have not released further details about the motive behind the kidnapping and assault, but investigations are ongoing. The arrest of the nine taxi drivers and marshals has raised concerns about potential criminal elements within the local taxi industry.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reiterated its commitment to rooting out crime and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. They have urged anyone with information related to this case or any other criminal activity to come forward and assist with the investigations.

The community of Botshabelo is reeling from the news of this brutal crime. Local residents have expressed their shock and outrage at the callous disregard for human life displayed by the perpetrators.
