Bonteheuwel, Cape Town – An alleged gangster was fatally shot in Netreg, Bonteheuwel, on Sunday evening, as rival gangs intensify their battle for control of the area's lucrative drug trade. The victim, a 22-year-old man, was shot approximately 20 times in what authorities believe is a gang-related hit.
The incident occurred at approximately 6.15pm on 1 June 2025, at the corner of Rosewood and Plumbago Streets. Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint of a shooting and, upon arrival, found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.
"Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint of a shooting on the corner of Rosewood and Plumbago Streets, Bonteheuwel, on Sunday, 1 June 2025, at about 6.15pm, in which a 22-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded," said Sergeant Twigg. "Upon arrival on the scene the police members found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined."
"The biggest issue around that part in the area is due to helse fight over drug turf," McKenzie stated. "There has been a gap since Peter Jaggers was murdered. In addition to that there is the challenge around Valhalla Park and Kalksteenfontein.”
Jaggers was found dead in a Free State dam in October 2024, along with another man, after reportedly being kidnapped by a Colombian cartel demanding a R50 million ransom.
The escalating gang rivalry is allegedly fuelled by increased police pressure on the drug trade in Bonteheuwel. Law enforcement's focus on targeting drug houses and disrupting distribution networks is believed to be angering the gangs, leading them to seek new territories and connections. This pressure has forced gangs to become kwaad as their connections start to narrow and look for other territory.
McKenzie further stated that the deceased was a well-known gangster and that the motive behind the shooting was gang-related.
Despite the violence, McKenzie noted that there has been a strong police presence in the area, with law enforcement working in collaboration with metro police officials.
McKenzie appealed to the community to continue providing information on potential trouble spots to help prevent criminals from evading justice. He urged residents to assist with providing information on which spots to monitor to prevent the skollies from getting away with criminal activities.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously. The investigation into the murder is ongoing.
