In the community of Athlone, Cape Town, a would-be hijacker got a taste of his own medicine on 18 May 2025, in an incident that underscored the community's resolve to fight back against crime. The events unfolded in Gatesville, where a family's peaceful evening was disrupted by an attempted hijacking that quickly turned against the perpetrator.
The story began as the victim, along with his wife and children, returned to their vehicle after purchasing food. As they settled in, an unidentified man entered the car from the passenger side, initiating a terrifying ordeal.
Details of the incident emerged through community networks, with Aqeelah Abrahams, a member of a local neighborhood watch, providing insights into the unfolding events. According to Abrahams, an alert was circulated on a community chat, signaling an attempted hijacking and requesting urgent assistance.
Responding swiftly, Abrahams and other members from various neighborhood watch groups converged on the scene. Upon arrival, they learned from the victim that a confrontation had ensued after the suspect entered the vehicle. During the struggle, the victim realized that the firearm brandished by the suspect was not genuine. In an attempt to subdue the suspect, the victim was stabbed in the arm.
However, the suspect's plans were about to unravel. Alerted by the commotion, members of the public intervened, turning the tables on the would-be hijacker. The community members reportedly apprehended the suspect and subjected him to a severe beating.
It was later revealed that the suspect was allegedly a repeat offender. He was transported to a local hospital to receive medical attention for the injuries he sustained during the community's intervention. Following treatment, he was taken into police custody.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the Athlone police had registered a case of attempted robbery and assault. The incident occurred at approximately 7pm in Gatesville. Twigg stated that the victim and his family were assisted by community members who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police. The victim sustained injuries to his arm and hand.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court to face charges related to the attempted robbery and assault.
The incident in Athlone bears similarities to another attempted hijacking that occurred recently in Gauteng province. In that case, the swift response of police officers foiled an attempted hijacking on the M10 road in the Cullinan policing area.
Reports indicated that the incident occurred when a motorist pulled over to the side of the road. A white Volkswagen Jetta stopped in front of him, and three armed suspects emerged from the vehicle. One of the men, brandishing a firearm, ordered the victim to exit his car.
However, the suspects' plans were thwarted by the timely arrival of a police vehicle. Panicking, they instructed the victim to leave and fled back into their car. Nearby officers were immediately alerted and pursued the suspects, successfully intercepting and apprehending all three individuals.
A search of the suspects led to the recovery of a firearm loaded with eight rounds of ammunition. The men were unable to provide a valid explanation for possessing the weapon.
The suspects were arrested and face charges of attempted hijacking, as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine if the suspects are linked to other criminal activities. The recovered firearm will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether it was used in previous crimes.
Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, commended the officers for their rapid response and dedication to maintaining community safety. He emphasized the police's commitment to combating crime and protecting citizens.
