A South African-produced Pan-African drama exploring love, betrayal and broken vows has taken Netflix by storm, topping charts in 16 countries across Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia.

The Polygamist, a 22-episode series produced by Stained Glass TV, is currently the number one-ranked show in multiple territories and sits at number three globally on the streaming platform, according to the production company.

The gripping drama centres on the chaotic life of Jonas “Jonasi” Gomora, portrayed by Sdumo Mtshali, and the four women whose lives become deeply entangled with his.

The star-studded cast includes Gugu Gumede as Joyce Gomora, Celeste Ntuli as Essie Gomora, Kwanele Mthethwa, Luyanda Zwane and veteran actress Sthandiwe Kgoroge.

Social media frenzy

Since its release, the series has ignited heated debate online, with audiences reacting strongly to Jonasi’s audacious double life and the emotional fallout experienced by the women around him.

Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson could barely contain her excitement in a post on X, writing in all caps that the series had her “in a chokehold” and that she binged all 22 episodes on her day off.

American talk show host and comedian Sherri Shepherd posted a four-minute TikTok breaking down the drama-filled twists in the Gomora household.

Nigerian-American music star Davido also weighed in, posting on X: “Yo, Jonasi is wild.”

Legendary Lion King producer Lebo M praised the storytelling and production quality in an Instagram video, though he suggested the title might not fully capture the depth of the narrative.

“But the truth is, there are Jonasis out there. Globally. There are men and female Jonasis,” Lebo M said, acknowledging the show’s reflection of real-life complexities.

Even Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero joined the conversation, joking on Facebook after finishing the series that he had “some questions” for Jonasi Gomora about managing four relationships and a billion-rand empire.

“Anyways, let me focus on reclaiming Johannesburg,” Morero quipped.

From page to global platform

The hit series is based on the novel The Polygamist by Zimbabwe-born author Sukoluhle Sue Nyathi, who self-published the book 14 years ago.

Nyathi, who initially aspired to study journalism, instead pursued a finance degree at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe. While building a career in finance and investment, she continued writing after hours.

“My career in finance never stifled my creativity, as I continue to write after hours to escape the drudgery of economic shop talk,” she notes in her online biography.

Her other novels include A Family Affair, The Gold Digger, When Secrets Become Stories and An Angel’s Demise.

With its mix of cultural nuance, emotional intensity and provocative themes, The Polygamist has not only captivated African audiences but also found resonance globally — cementing its place as one of the continent’s most talked-about television exports of the year.
