THE drama happening in e.tv soapie, Imbewu: The Seed, doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling.
These were the words of informants, who said the plot just thickened. An insider claimed the telenovela’s staff and actors’ salaries were recently slashed because the producers allegedly felt they earned “too much”.
Said an insider: “We weren’t told that salaries would be cut. What’s irritating is that they aren’t engaging with us. They just told us what would happen. Period! Also, this will affect us financially because when we went to our holiday breaks, some of us bought houses and cars as we weren’t briefed about the salary cuts.”
According to the informant, the salary cuts have resulted in some staffers kicking the drama series to the curb.
Another source said the producers were being unfair. Insisted the source: “What’s happening to us is sad. It’s a pity, as we need this job. Finding work is hard these days. If I had a plan B, I was also going to leave.”
The third mole told the SunTeam some salaries had been cut by as much as R10,000.
“People like Melusi Yeni, Thembi Mtshali-Jones, Leleti Khumalo and Tony Kgoroge weren’t affected by this process. They have been around and are clued up about the workings of the industry. They were unaffected by the sudden salary cuts.”
Marketing and communications manager at e.tv, Maki Mokome, refused to comment, arguing the soapie didn’t discuss salaries with the media.
“It’s a matter of principles, I can’t discuss people’s salaries,” she said.
Melusi, Thembi, Leleti and Tony could not be reached for comment.
