Bail Appeal of Musician Shebeshxt Dismissed by Polokwane High Court
The bail appeal of musician Lehlogonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke was dismissed today, 9 January, by the Polokwane High Court. This ruling follows the denial of his bail application by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 17 December 2025, which found a significant likelihood that he would commit similar offences, particularly as many of the alleged acts occurred during his music performances.
Chauke was arrested in November on nine charges, including three counts of attempted murder. One of the serious incidents involved him allegedly shooting and wounding a fan in Ladanna in October of last year.
In her judgment, Acting Judge AJ Burnett addressed the complexities surrounding Schedule 6 bail applications, emphasising that the burden of proof required from accused individuals must be taken seriously. “The appellant has simply not met the challenge of proving exceptional circumstances. I accordingly find that the learned magistrate did exercise his discretion correctly,” she stated.
As a result of the court's decision, Chauke will remain in custody until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for 18 February at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court. The case continues to attract attention, raising questions about the legal implications for artists involved in criminal activities.
